More than 3000 households on islands have access to electricity
By the end of January 2017, people in Kien Giang province received a great pleasure when the Southern Power Corporation (EVNSPC) concurrently energized projects for connecting the national power grid to Lai Son (Kien Hai province), Hon Nghe, Son Hai (Kien Luong province) island communes, electrifying for 3,040 households on these islands.
All the three projects cost more than VND 652 billion and were funded by the proceedings of the Government’s program on electrification for rural, mountainous and island areas during 2013 - 2020.
These projects’ objectives are to supply stable and uninterrupted electricity 24/24 hours to island communes in Kien Giang province; to secure national defense and security, to sustain the national sovereignty; to improve living standards of residents, border defending force and coast guards in the island communes located in territorial waters in the South of Vietnam.
It is expected that these projects would promote tourisms on such potential islands as Lai Son, Hon Nghe, Son Hai, in which Son Hai commune is prominent for the well-known Ba Lua archipelago with 42 islands of various sizes which is compared to Ha Long bay in the South West sea.

Big investments is ongoing
Not only having given high priorities to early completion of on-grid electrification projects for the islands near the coast, EVNSPC has completed and put into operation a lot of other important projects from the beginning of 2017. At Loc An commune (Long Thanh district, Dong Nai province), EVNSPC has energized Binh Son 110 kV Substation Project. The project costs VND 83 billion, including: Constructing a new double circuit 110 kV transmission line and 110 kV substation, SCADA transmission line to be connected to the Southern Load Dispatch Center. This substation’s operation will secure electricity supply to Binh Son, Loc An industrial zones, serve for people’s lives at Loc An, Binh Son communes, improve stability, safety and reliability of power supply, help mitigate power loss of the grid.
Before that, at Loc Thang town (Bao Lam district, Lam Dong province), EVNSPC had organized commissioning, energizing, and putting into operation a 110 kV substation project. This project was in the framework of the project on emission intensity mitigation in electric energy supply which has the total investment cost of more than VND 45 billion and the substation capacity of 2 x 40 MVA; in which, in the first phase, a 40 MVA - 110/22 kV substation and double circuit 110 kV branch were installed. The substation upon operation will enhance the grid capacity in the region, meeting the electricity consumption requirements for socio-economic development and social lives, production and business activities of the people in Bao Lam district and Bao Loc city (Lam Dong province).
At present, the power sector in the South have been expediting their project construction and completion activities to supply electricity to un-electrified households who are mainly Khmer people in Kien Giang province (phase 2), with more than 6,130 households. The project total investment cost is VND 85 billion. As planned, in 2017, the power sector in the South will allocate VND 8,348 billion in power system investments; in which investments in the power grid will be up to VND 6,700 billion.
