EVN invests thousands of billions of dongs in securing electricity supply to shrimp farming zones

Exactly, the funding resources required for rehabilitating and developing medium and low voltage grids to assist aquaculture activities in 6 coastal provinces in the Cuu Long river delta (Ca Mau, Bac Lieu, Soc Trang, Tra Vinh, Ben Tre and Tien Giang) up to 2020 will be around VND 1,494.8 billion.

Vietnam Shrimp Sector Development Conference has just been held in Ca Mau province under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc and Vice Prime Minister Trinh Dinh Dung. Mr. Duong Quang Thanh, Chairman of Board of Members of Vietnam Electricity representing EVN attended the Conference.

Over the past time, Vietnam Electricity and Southern Power Corporation (EVNSPC) have invested VND 876 billion in power grid projects in order to secure electricity supply to the aquaculture industry, particularly the industrial shrimp farming activities in coastal provinces in the South where is the major shrimp farming zone of the country.

However, the current situation of small, individual, dispersed  shrimp farming households  spontaneously developing according to the shrimp material market has led to over-loaded power grids in various times. At present, shrimp farming areas has been rising unceasingly, there are thus such great and urgent requirements for investing, rehabilitating and developing the power grid to timely satisfy the load development demands in planned industrial shrimp farming zones.

According to EVNSPC, in order to arrange VND 1,494.8 billion for rehabilitating and developing medium and low voltage power grid to serve for aquaculture activities in 6 coastal provinces in Cuu Long river delta area, the Corporation has fully utilized ODA financial resources by applying EVN for ODA funds through the Distribution Efficiency Project 2 (DEP2), to be financed by the World Bank and implemented during 2018 - 2020.

In 2017 particularly, EVNSPC plans to allocate VND 303 billion in order to invest in supplying electricity to shrimp farming with higher priority given to urgent regions having vigorously developing farming pond areas.

Additionally, the Corporation has been carrying out a pilot project of assisting power saving for shrimp farming households in Cuu Long river delta area and some South Central region during 2016 - 2018 in order to communicate safe electricity usage in shrimp farming activities.

EVN and EVNSPC has recommended that the Government and central ministries and agencies should consider issuance of policies to financially assist investment and development in difficult areas, because investment capital resources required for electricity supply to industrial shrimp farming in Cuu Long river delta region up to 2020 will be about VND 3,600 billion and the mobilization of adequate finance by EVNSPC for power system development has faced a lot of difficulties.
