Kick-off ceremony for Earth Hour 2017 Campaign in Vietnam – “LIGHTS OFF TO TURN ON THE FUTURE”

* The Ministry of Trade and Industry announces to launch Earth Hour 2017 Campaign in Vietnam with the message “Lights off to turn on the future”. * This campaign will be held across the country in 63 provinces and cities. * Many practical activities are performed such as business’ commitments to use electricity economically and efficiently, information dissemination to households, communication activities in schools, cycling event, utilizing the communication strength of social networking to spread the humane sense of the campaign, lights-off ceremony being lively broadcasted on VTV1.

On March 5, 2017, the Ministry of Trade and Industry held a ceremony to officially trigger Earth Hour 2017 Campaign in Vietnam with the message “LIGHTS OFF TO TURN ON THE FUTURE”. To this end, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh city, Da Nang and 60 provinces and cities will simultaneously switch the lights off for one hour from 20h30 to 21h30 on March 25, 2017.

Earth Hour 2017 Campaign in Vietnam has been led by the Ministry of Trade and Industry, co-sponsored by Vietnam Electricity and Daikin Vietnam. Vietnam Electricity has been the sponsor accompanying the campaign for 9 consecutive years.

Earth Hour Campaign encourages and calls on the communities for jointly change the public perception on environmental protection, energy saving, preparedness for climate change, conservation of natural resources of the country not only for today but also for the Vietnamese future generation ever after. These are the implications of this year’s theme: “LIGHTS OFF TO TURN ON THE FUTURE”.

A range of activities are being held in the framework of the program such as: green dream kiosk, 60+ photo booth, funny team building games, musical performance and interactions with ambassadors. Especially more than 1000 volunteers take part in a large flash mob dance to promote the campaign.

Among the event series in response to the campaign, activities connecting businesses and the Earth Hour 2017 will be organized in Ha Noi, Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City to call on 2,000 businesses to commit to power savings in their factories and plants, diminishing on-grid power consumption at peak hours and signing up to become this year’s campaigners.

Communication activities are conducted to spread useful information to households through handbooks on economical and efficient power consumption, which provide households with fundamental knowledge on how to use home electrical appliances in a saving and efficient manner.

Interactive activities with universities, colleges, high schools, secondary and elementary schools are the focal point in the range of activities under the framework of the campaign, with the aim of intensive and extensive communication of the campaign’s message via pupils and students as the core messengers, and enhancement of awareness of the young intellectual people on power saving and environmental protection.

After the kick-off ceremony today, various activities alongside and responding to the campaign will be carried out during this March all over the country. Lights-off symbolization will occur from 20h30 to 21h30 on March 25, 2017 at the August Revolution Square in Hanoi. Besides, the Organization Committee in coordination with universities will organize a cycling event for voluntary students together with the Earth Hour 2017 ambassadors passing through main streets. At the same time, other cities across the country concurrently organized communication activities to encourage their local people, organizations and businesses to respond to the campaign.

Especially, a live television program on Earth Hour 2017 to be broadcasted on VTV1 channel – Vietnam Television will be an impressive ending, showing a strong commitment of the Government of Vietnam and Vietnamese people together with the international communities in pursuit of economical energy consumption and environmental protection.
