Study on Vietnam- Laos Power Grid Interconnection

On July 21, at the headquarters of Vietnam Electricity (EVN), the consulting firm DIgSILENT Pacific presented the study on Vietnam – Laos power grid interconnections Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Energy & Mines Viraphonh Viravong attended the meeting.

At the meeting, the consulting firm DIgSILENT Pacific, the unit selected by the World Bank (WB) to conduct a study on the power grid interconnection between Vietnam and Laos, presented the study results of the current status of the power systems in Vietnam and Laos. Accordingly, the consultants shall make recommendations on the potential and opportunities for cooperation in the power sector between the two nations.

DIgSILENT Pacific Consulting Firm also proposed the alternatives for interconnection between the two nations, emphasizing on the advantages and disadvantages of the alternatives such as AC connection or DC connection, etc.

Speaking at a meeting, Deputy Minister Viraphonh Viravong said: Currently, the power grid system of Laos is not large enough in scope. It would not be sustainable if just relying on the small power sources to develop the country. Therefore, the Laotian side completely agreed on the study and evaluation of the World Bank about the long-term development plan of Laos as well as Vietnam in a spirit of cooperation to ensure equitable mutual benefits to the parties.

Mr. Pham Manh Thang, EVN Board of Directors member stressed: The Vietnamese side appreciated the support by WB in the study to develop the collaboration between the two power systems of the two nations. He also suggested the consulting firm DigSILENT Pacific study the results from other nations to enhance the cooperation program of the power sectors between the two nations.
