The Lai Chau hydro-power project has a total investment of VND 35,700 billion. It is the hydropower plant project of special level constructed on the Da river.
The main task of the project is to supply power to the national power system, contributing to the flood control in the rainy season, water supply in the dry season for the Northern Plains, promoting socio-economic development of the provinces of Lai Chau, Dien Bien and the North-Western region, ensuring the national security and defense of the Northwestern region.

Unit No 2 of the Lai Chau hydropower plant generated power on schedule as required by the Vietnam Electricity. This is also one of important prerequisite factors to ensure the progress of completion and generation of power of Unit No.3 expected in November 2016. The whole project shall be completed in 2016, one year ahead of the approved schedule.
Mr. Pham Hong Phuong-Director of the Son La – Lai Chau hydropower project management board said: In the coming time, the labour forces from the contractors, the consultants and the project management board, etc., will further enhance the inspection, supervision, progress monitoring, quality of installation, equipment supply; finalizing remaining items of the scenery, etc., to ensure the inauguration progress of Lai Chau hydropower plant project in December 2016.
Reportedly, as of this moment, Lai Chau hydropower plant has supplied to the national power system (through unit No 1) an energy amount of 840 million kWh.
