5 years: 0.79%

In the 2011-2015 period, the power loss rate of the National Power Transmission Corporation (EVNNPT) has been reduced by 0.79%. Although the target has not been fulfilled, this is also a remarkable figure in the context of difficulties and challenges faced by EVNNPT.

Dependent on the planning

It can be said that, the period of 2011-2015 was the most difficult and challenging one for EVNNPT when implementing the target of reducing transmission losses. In the past five years, the transmission system has always been operated in a tense situation, many parts of the system have operated at a full load and overload. In particular, from 2013 to present, the load demand in the South has increased sharply compared with the generation, then 500 kV North-South transmission line has frequently transmitted power from North to South with high capacity.

During the 2011-2015 period, the power loss rate on the transmission system has been significantly reduced, from 3.13% in 2010 to 2.34% in 2015. According to Mr. Tran Viet Ngai, the Chairman of Energy Association of Vietnam: "in the context of difficulties, the reduction of transmission losses by 0.79% in 5 years is laudable efforts made by EVNNPT, especially in the conditions that many of the 500 kV and 220 kV lines having been constructed so far have degraded".

EVNNPT accelerating the power transmission projects in order to efficiently reduce the power losses

Though having not fulfilled the target set by EVN, during the period of 2011-2015, the transmission loss rate has been significantly reduced. Moreover, the high transmission capacity of 500 kV North-South lines increased the losses, however, facilitated the effective mobilization of the cheap power sources from the North, ensuring power supply for the South and bring in socio-economic efficiency in general and in production-business of EVN in particular.

Difficulties Resolved in each step

Professor, Academician Tran Dinh Long said: "to reduce transmission losses, it is needed to ensure the balancing principle in the power development planning to step by step resolve the overloaded situation on the power grid.” Over 5 years, EVNNPT has completed and put into operation 213 projects of 500 kV and 220kV with a total length of 8,105 km of lines and total transformer capacity of 28,426 MVA. The series of important power transmission projects connecting power plants to the power sources put into operation have contributed to reducing transmission losses of the EVNNPT.

In addition, the NPT also identified that fault was one of the causes of the high transmission losses. In the last years, the EVNNPT has strengthened the repair and maintenance to timely fix the defects, faults and abnormal phenomena on the transmission system. Especially, the leaders of EVNNPT paid attention to the analyzing, finding out of root causes of such problems, and then came up with solutions that were timely processed and brought high efficiency in operating the transmission system. As a result, the faults on the substations and lines were significantly reduced. In the period 2011-2015, except for the fault on the 500 kV Di Linh-Tan Dinh line occurring on 22 May 2013 causing loss of power by objective reason, basically, the transmission grid has been operated safely and stably, contributing to reduction in transmission losses.

There are still numerous difficulties and challenges, but with what has been achieved in the period 2011-2015, hopefully, EVNNPT will successfully implement the task of reducing transmission losses in 2016 and the subsequent years.
