Conference on efficient and economical use of electricity during period of increasing electricity load demand in 2024
The conference was held in a live and online form at the Departments of Industry and Trade, corporations/power companies in the Central and Southern regions.
Speaking at the conference, Mr. Trinh Quoc Vu - Deputy Director of the Department of Energy Saving and Sustainable Development (MOIT) said that Vietnam has made a commitment to achieve net zero emissions by 2050 at the COP26 Conference and reaffirmed at COP 27 and COP 28 Conferences on United Nations Climate Change.
To achieve the goals of green growth, sustainable development, and ensuring power supply security, in addition to many important plans, strategies, and works being implemented synchronously by the Government, ministries, and localities, MOIT continues to emphasize: Power-saving and Energy-saving are important and effective solutions in both the short and long term to help reduce pressure in energy exploitation and supply as well as contributing to ensuring energy security and environmental protection.
Mr. Trinh Quoc Vu - Deputy Director of Department of Energy Saving and Sustainable Development (MOIT) delivering opening speech at conference
According to a survey by the National Program on Economical and Efficient Energy Use for the period 2019-2030, our country's energy-saving potential is still very large, especially in the industrial sector, accounting for over 50% of total national energy consumption, the potential for energy savings can reach 20-30%.
Currently, the country has over 3,000 key energy users, with a total electricity consumption of over 80 billion kWh/year. If only these businesses join hands to save at least 2% of electricity consumption/year, on average they will save about 1.6 billion kWh/year, equivalent to saving more than VND 3,200 billion of electricity bill. And if all of the more than 30 million electricity customers practice saving electricity, its effect will become huge.
Deputy Director of Electricity Regulatory Authority Nguyen The Huu sharing about importance of using electricity economically and effectively
According to Deputy Director Nguyen The Huu, to contribute to ensuring power supply, in addition to the efforts of the Electricity industry and propaganda work, synchronously implement electricity saving solutions on a nationwide scale, thus, the implementation of demand-side management (DSM) programs is considered a practical and effective solution. In fact, over the past decade, along with the focus on developing renewable energy, promoting savings, and improving energy efficiency, DSM programs, especially the Demand Response Program (DR) have been researched and gradually implemented effectively in Vietnam.
Specifically, according to EVN's report, there was a time in May-June 2023, when the total adjusted reduced capacity of customers actively participating in the DR program was nearly 500MW, this has contributed significantly to reducing pressure on the supply and demand imbalance in the power system.
Head of EVN Sales Department Nguyen Quoc Dung said that Vietnam Electricity Group has been preparing solutions to ensure power supply for the hot season, including promoting electricity saving.
EVN has established a national Steering Committee for power supply and electricity saving headed by the leaders of each unit; Issued documents implementing Directives No. 20/CT-TTg, No. 05/CT-TTg, No. 05/CT-BCT to level 4 units; Organized inspection and supervision of DSM programs (electricity saving, DR, electrical load shifting); Organize working groups including leaders EVN and member units to work directly with local authorities on the situation of power supply, electricity-saving, and so on.
Head of EVN Business Department Nguyen Quoc Dung informing about EVN's solutions to promote electricity saving
As of March 15, 2024, electricity units have signed commitments to use electricity according to the electricity load chart with 13,370 customers; and signed an agreement to participate in non-commercial electricity load adjustment with 11,395 customers.
At the conference, ESS Community was officially launched with more than 20 co-founders. The birth of the ESS Community contributes to solving challenges in using electricity economically and effectively; at the same time, supports the Electricity Saving Network to more effectively carry out training, consulting, and propaganda activities on the economical and effective use of electricity.
