Viet Nam - Laos to complete cooperation agreements in energy sector soon

At the meeting to welcome the Lao Minister of Energy and Mines on 18 February 2019, Deputy Prime Minister Trinh Dinh Dung said that the cooperation in the energy sector played a key role, bringing not only economic benefits, but also crucial political and security meanings, while showing mutual sharing and support between the two countries.

On that basis, Deputy Prime Minister Trinh Dinh Dung highly appreciated the active negotiation on the content of the Agreement between the two Governments on cooperation in developing works of hydropower, renewable energy and mining between the Ministry of Industry and Trade of Viet Nam and the Ministry of Energy & Mines of Laos so that it can be approved and signed by senior leaders of the two countries at the soonest.

Viet Nam is determined not to support development of projects about energy affecting the environment. At the same time, the two countries should develop mechanisms to ensure strict control of construction investment, quality and safety of the irrigation reservoir - dam, hydropower works in border areas, on the flows with downstream in Viet Nam territory soon.

At the meeting, Minister of Energy & Mines of Laos Khammany Inthirath said he had worked with the Ministry of Industry and Trade, Vietnam Electricity, Vietnam Oil and Gas Group on the implementation of agreements between the two Governments on cooperating to develop hydropower projects in Laos, connecting power systems, trading electric power between the two countries.
