According to EVN’s Deputy General Director Vo Quang Lam, by the end of 2018, the total output of Vietnam's power system reached over 48,000MW, ranking the second in ASEAN (just lower than that of Indonesia). In which, the power sources managed by EVN and its affiliated power generation corporations account for 58%.
Also, the produced power output has gained a high growth rate for long period. In 2000, the produced power output was only 22 billion kWh. In 2018 it was 220.31 billion kWh and this figure is expected to reach 242 billion kWh in 2019.
The current transmission grid system includes 7,800km of 500kV line, 17,000km of 220kV line, 19,500km of 110kV line and over 150,000MVA of capacity of 110 - 500kV transformers, ranked the top in the ASEAN region.
EVN has strengthened the implementation of solutions and the power supply quality has been improved significantly. In the first 6 months of 2019, the Group's power loss rate was 6.59%, 0.17% lower than that of the same period in 2018, ranked 3rd in ASEAN (after Singapore and Thailand). In terms of access-to-electricity index, Vietnam is ranked 4th in the region.
Renewable energy growing rapidly
According to EVN’s Deputy General Director Vo Quang Lam, while traditional energy sources are increasingly exhausted, the development of renewable energy such as wind and solar power will make a great contribution to energy security.
By the end of June 2019, there were 89 wind and solar power plants connected to the grid with a total installed capacity of 5,038MW, accounting for 9.5% of the total installed capacity of the national power system. It is expected that by 31 December 2019, new renewable energy sources with a total output of 1,000MW will be connected to the national power system.
For the rooftop solar power alone, over the past 3 months, more than 4,000 households have installed rooftop solar power systems with a total capacity of 200MW. It is expected by EVN, that, by the end of 2019, the total capacity of rooftop solar power will reach more 300MW.
Currently, Vietnam is applying the purchase tarrif at 9.35 cents/kWh for rooftop solar power. The Ministry of Industry and Trade is proposing to further apply this tarrif for rooftop solar power until the end of 2021 to encourage the development of this source of power.
EVN’s Deputy General Director Vo Quang Lam also emphasized that developing rooftop solar power is an effective solution to reduce transmission costs and the price pressure as well as increase the usage efficiency.
As expected by EVN that, by the end of 2020, the rooftop solar power will achieve the capacity of 2,000MW.
