50 years of Southern Power Corporation: Honoring the past – Proudly moving forward

Southern Power Corporation (EVNSPC) has chosen not to hold a formal ceremony for its 50th anniversary. Instead, it has allocated the entire saved budget, along with additional mobilized funding, to build 815 new homes for disadvantaged families living in temporary or dilapidated housing.

From the ruins of war to power poles amid the sea

Immediately after taking over the power grid on April 30, 1975 - the Liberation Day of Southern Vietnam - EVNSPC engineers faced immense challenges: lack of equipment, shortage of technical personnel, and a severely degraded infrastructure likened to a war-torn garment. But with their bare hands and determined minds, those early pioneers braved all hardships — stringing power lines, erecting poles, and reviving substations that had long gone cold in the ashes of war. From sourcing materials and repairing equipment to restarting the operations of Thu Duc and Cho Quan power plants, as well as small diesel generators in localities, to restoring the remote Da Nhim Hydropower Plant to investing in the construction of nationally significant hydropower plants such as Thac Mo and Tri An — so that the light of electricity could gradually be reconnected, spread quietly yet steadily and firmly.

EVNSPC entered the renovation era with the role of a trailblazer. After overcoming technical difficulties, EVNSPC was like a drawn bow, poised to launch forward into the future, carrying with it the aspiration for integration and sustainable development. Projects once thought impossible — such as the 110kV submarine cable to Phu Quoc, the 220kV overhead line to Phu Quoc, and the 110kV lines to Hon Nghe, Lai Son, and Hon Tre islands — were successfully realized. EVNSPC proudly stands as the pioneer in extending the national power grid to distant island territories — a mission fulfilled with honor and unwavering pride.

After 50 years of growth, EVNSPC now supplies electricity to over 9.5 million customers across 21 southern provinces and cities from Ninh Thuan to Ca Mau, with the electrification rate reaching 99.90% of all households. Notably, EVNSPC is also the power corporation that supplies electricity to the largest number of island districts in the country, including Phu Quoc island city, Kien Hai island district (Kien Giang province), Phu Quy island district (Binh Thuan province), Con Dao district (Ba Ria - Vung Tau province), Truong Sa island district (Khanh Hoa province), and the DK offshore platforms.

Spreading humanity with homes of compassion

Right from the beginning of the year, the Party Committee and leadership of EVNSPC issued a resolution and launched practical emulation movements, with a strong focus on practicing thrift and combating wastefulness in all activities — from office operations to construction sites, from management to execution. The Party Committee and leadership of EVNSPC decided not to organize a 50th-anniversary ceremony, instead, they allocated the entire budget originally planned for celebratory activities and formalities to a more practical and meaningful goal: supporting the construction of 315 new houses for impoverished households across 21 Southern provinces and cities, with a total funding of VND 18.9 billion. In addition, EVNSPC mobilized external social funding to support the construction of another 500 houses for low-income families in several provinces within its service area, with a total cost of VND 30 billion. This stands as the most substantial, practical, meaningful, and humanitarian gift from the Southern Power sector to the community. With a heartfelt commitment to honoring history, serving the nation, and supporting the people, EVNSPC has strived over the past half-century to be a State-owned enterprise that consistently upholds its social and community responsibilities.

Throughout its development journey, EVNSPC has consistently fostered human compassion by lighting up homes of kindness

Honoring the past – Proudly moving forward

Not only this, in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of Southern Vietnam, the reunification of the country, and the establishment of EVNSPC, from the very beginning of 2025, the Party Committee and leadership, together with over 20,000 staff members of the Corporation, launched and participated in emulation movements, resolutely aiming to complete 50 110kV power grid projects before April 30, 2025, as a practical tribute to history and a proud step forward.

Since the beginning of the year, the Corporation has successfully energized and put into operation 31 out of the 50 110kV power grid projects, with the remaining 19 projects continuing to be accelerated, aiming to be completed and energized before April 30, 2025

With the completion of 50 110kV power grid projects by April 30, 2025 — marking 50 years of national reunification — it also symbolizes 50 years of EVNSPC's partnership in the development of Southern Vietnam.

According to the plan for the first half of 2025, EVNSPC will continue to strive to complete the energization and commissioning of 84 110kV power grid projects. Among them, special focus will be given to resolving 100% of the long-standing issues with the 110kV power grid projects. By the end of 2025, EVNSPC will make every effort to complete the energization and commissioning of 122 110kV power grid projects, ensuring the timely and stable power supply for production and daily life across the 21 Southern provinces and cities, meeting the demand for 2026 and beyond.
