After 71 years of construction and continuous development, the national power system now has an installed capacity of approximately 90,000MW, ranking 2nd in Southeast Asia and 23rd globally. If Vietnam surpasses 90,000MW in installed capacity, it will be ranked among the world’s Top 20 largest power systems, EVN Chairman Dang Hoang An said.
The challenges for the national power system pointed out by the EVN Chairman are: the high rate of renewable energy, putting pressure on the operation of the power system; the change from a centralized control power system to a distributed power system model; the process of connecting the power grid with countries in the region poses new technical requirements that need to be resolved, etc.
Also, according to EVN Chairman Dang Hoang An, the power sector is currently prioritizing digital transformation to advance toward a smart power system by 2030. However, it is necessary to clearly define "which indicators are smart" to serve as a basis for implementation throughout the industry. In addition, it is necessary to transform the overall mindset as well as management and operational methods, and to apply AI (artificial intelligence) to support operations and maintenance, financial management, asset management, and more.

EVN Chairman Dang Hoang An speaking at conference
Mr. Dang Hoang An noted that, with electricity demand expected to grow at double-digit rates in the coming period, this will present significant opportunities for science and technology, manufacturing industries, and research in the power sector.
Regarding the manufacturing of electrical products and equipment, he noted that many products have been designed, manufactured, and effectively put into practical use by Vietnamese engineers and companies. He hopes that more units will enter the manufacturing market, accelerate product research and development, shorten the time required to bring products from the factory to practical application, and meet the sustainable development needs of the power industry.

Before plenary session, EVN Chairman Dang Hoang An and delegates visiting booths at Techshow 2025
The conference featured nearly 170 scientific reports and papers, which were shared and discussed during the plenary session and five thematic sessions, making a significant contribution to shaping the science and technology development strategy of Vietnam’s power sector in the coming period.
Simultaneously, within the conference framework, a Techshow exhibition was held with 52 booths presenting products and technological solutions from domestic and international units and partners in the power sector.
