Amid rising electricity demand from the early dry season, coal supply for power generation in 2026 is being closely coordinated between Vietnam Electricity (EVN) and its suppliers, ensuring readiness for high-level dispatch scenarios.

Recently, the Steering Committee for coal supply to power generation—comprising Vietnam Electricity (EVN), Vietnam National Coal – Mineral Industries Holding Corporation Limited (Vinacomin), and Dong Bac Corporation—held its first meeting of 2026 in Quang Ninh Province. The meeting was co-chaired by EVN Vice President Pham Le Phu, Colonel Vu Sy Thang – Vice President of Dong Bac Corporation, and Vinacomin Vice President Tran Hai Binh.

According to EVN, in the first quarter of 2026, the total coal volume supplied by Vinacomin and Dong Bac Corporation to EVN’s coal-fired power plants surpassed 6.1 million tons, including over 4 million tons from Vinacomin and more than 2.1 million tons from Dong Bac Corporation. Coal supply was secured thanks to high inventory levels carried over from the end of 2025 and stable delivery from the beginning of the year, meeting system dispatch requirements. EVN’s power generation units proactively coordinated with suppliers to update demand, receive, and stockpile coal, ensuring fuel availability for electricity production in the early months of the year.

Coal-fired power generation accounted for approximately 52.8% of the total power generation mix in Q1, with EVN’s coal-fired plants continuing to play a crucial role in balancing electricity supply and demand.

In the context of ongoing volatility in global energy markets and extreme weather conditions such as El Niño, all parties agreed to strengthen coordination, information exchange, and demand forecasting to proactively develop appropriate supply plans, ensure readiness to meet high dispatch requirements of the national power system, particularly during the upcoming peak hot months.

At the meeting, EVN requested its member units to closely coordinate with Vinacomin and Dong Bac Corporation to review and accurately update coal demand by phase, while maximizing coal stockpiles at both power plants and coal production and processing facilities to enhance contingency capacity.

EVN also urged suppliers to accelerate the delivery of imported coal and expand their sourcing of suitable coal to ensure a stable and high-quality long-term supply. In addition, maintaining and improving coordination procedures in coal delivery, quality control, and supply progress remain key priorities in the coming period.

From the suppliers’ side, Vinacomin and Dong Bac Corporation emphasized the importance of strengthening energy market forecasting, developing realistic dispatch scenarios, and called on EVN’s coal-fired power plants to further improve storage capacity and enhance coordination in supply operations.
