Ensuring stable coal supply for power generation in the last four months of 2025

09:57, 19/09/2025

The Steering Committee for Coal Supply for Power Generation, comprising Vietnam Electricity (EVN), Vietnam National Coal and Mineral Industries Group (Vinacomin), and the Dong Bac Corporation, held its second meeting of 2025 on September 19 in Hue City. The parties discussed and proposed solutions to ensure sufficient coal supply for EVN’s thermal power plants during the last four months of this year as well as for 2026.

The meeting was co-chaired by EVN’s Vice President Ngo Son Hai, Vinacomin’s Deputy General Director Nguyen Huy Nam, and Colonel Vu Sy Thang, Deputy Commander of Corps 19 and concurrently Deputy General Director of the Dong Bac Corporation.

Meeting of Steering Committee for Coal Supply for Power Generation between EVN, Vinacomin, and Dong Bac Corporation on September 19, 2025

According to EVN’s report, in the first eight months of 2025, Vinacomin and the Dong Bac Corporation supplied a total of 15.02 million tonnes of coal to EVN’s thermal power plants. By the end of August, the total output of coal-fired thermal power across the national power system had reached nearly 105.97 billion kWh, of which EVN’s coal-fired plants accounted for about 45.42 billion kWh. Overall, coal supply has been ensured at sufficient levels to meet power generation needs, with reserves factored in for even the most extreme scenarios.

In 2026, demand for coal at EVN’s thermal power plants is forecast to remain high, within the framework of the long-term cooperation agreement between EVN, Vinacomin, and the Dong Bac Corporation, with a total committed supply volume of 28.7 million tonnes per year. Within this, demand for anthracite coal from EVN’s plants is expected to remain relatively stable, while plants using imported coal will see higher utilization as new thermal power projects come online in the national grid (Quang Trach 1, Formosa Ha Tinh 2, and Long Phu 1).

EVN’s Vice President Ngo Son Hai speaks

EVN requested that Vinacomin and the Dong Bac Corporation continue seeking other suitable sources of imported coal to ensure the security of power supply, particularly long-term stability. EVN also proposed that suppliers consider adjusting the pricing of blended imported coal in line with international market trends, thereby supporting power generation units in fulfilling their task of producing and supplying electricity for socio-economic development.

Speaking at the meeting, Colonel Vu Sy Thang, Deputy General Director of the Dong Bac Corporation, affirmed that the unit clearly recognizes its responsibility to ensure coal for power generation and will provide maximum support to secure coal supply.

On behalf of Vinacomin, Deputy General Director Nguyen Huy Nam expressed the company’s expectation to receive more forward-looking forecasts and detailed information from EVN in order to plan coal supply earlier and more effectively, ensuring smooth coordination among the parties.

Representing the EVN delegation, Vice President Ngo Son Hai commended Vinacomin and the Dong Bac Corporation for their efforts in preparing sufficient, high-quality coal for power generation, even under the most extreme scenarios, thereby enabling EVN to fulfill its mandate.

He also emphasized the shared commitment to continued close and coordinated cooperation to secure coal supply for the remaining months of 2025 and throughout 2026, with the overarching goal of ensuring stable electricity supply.
