The Expanded Hoa Binh  Hydropower Plant is one of the national key projects. The item of dismantling the cofferdam and constructing the canal area to the water intake gate has been completed on schedule despite facing many pressures such as: urgent time, the requirement to maintain the water level of Hoa Binh Reservoir at a low level to support the construction while still ensuring backup capacity for the national power system in the context of peak heat.

According to President and CEO Nguyen Anh Tuan, the implementation of the dismantling of the cofferdam and the canal to the water intake gate is the most difficult "critical path" of the project. Completing the project on schedule is an important premise for the generation of Unit 1 on August 19, 2025, as directed by the Prime Minister.

Director of Power Project Management Board 1 Bui Phuong Nam reports on construction implementation process

According to Mr. Bui Phuong Nam - Director of Power Project Management Board 1, the cofferdam has a height of 123m (equal to the height of Hoa Binh Hydropower Dam), 300m long. With the intake canal, the total length along the canal centerline is 236.8m. The construction work encountered many difficulties, such as: narrow construction site, deep foundation pit, steep construction road. In addition, the rainy weather directly affected the progress. The excavation of the foundation pit depends on the management of the water level of Hoa Binh Reservoir.

“However, with the close attention and direction of the Ministries, Central Government, and related units, the performance of this item started on February 15, 2025, and by June 13, 2025, the excavation of the discharge canal was completed, 2 days earlier than schedule,” said Mr. Bui Phuong Nam.
