A key infrastructure component serving the construction of the Tri An Hydropower Plant Expansion Project was officially completed with the closure of Hieu Liem Bridge at 07:45 on May 1, 2026. Following this important milestone, Power Project Management Board No. 3 (EVNPMB3) and contractors will continue efforts to bring the bridge into operation and open it to traffic by the end of June.

Hieu Liem Bridge (Tri An Commune, Dong Nai Province) is designed to Class II transport standards, with a total length of approximately 249.5 meters and a width of 9 meters. Construction began in late December 2024, with the objective of supporting logistics for the Tri An Hydropower Plant Expansion Project, particularly the transportation of oversized and overweight equipment for hydropower unit installation.

From a regional planning perspective, the bridge plays a crucial role in completing the inter-regional transport network, ensuring seamless connectivity between Dong Nai Province and its neighboring areas, including those of Ho Chi Minh City.

For residents of Tri An Commune, the completion and upcoming operation of the bridge carry significant practical benefits. For decades, travel and goods transportation across the Dong Nai River have relied on the Hieu Liem ferry. Once the bridge is operational, this mode of transport will be replaced, reducing risks during the rainy season and significantly shortening travel time.

Local residents are looking forward to bridge’s completion, which will connect both sides of Dong Nai River and make travel more convenient instead of relying on ferries as before. Photo source: EVNPMB3

Hieu Liem Bridge is a key component of the Tri An Hydropower Plant Expansion Project, currently the largest hydropower project in southern Vietnam. The project is invested by Vietnam Electricity (EVN) with a total investment of nearly VND 4 trillion. The expansion includes two additional units with a total capacity of 200MW.

EVNPMB3 and contractors are working intensively to complete the remaining works, aiming to open the bridge to traffic by June 30, 2026, to meet both equipment transportation needs for the project and local travel demand.

Once the transport infrastructure, including Hieu Liem Bridge, is completed to support equipment delivery, EVNPMB3 and contractors will accelerate installation works, targeting power generation by the end of 2027.

The synchronization of transport and energy infrastructure in the area is expected to drive socio-economic development in Tri An Commune and Dong Nai Province as a whole.

On the river, barges carrying beams maneuvered flexibly with water flow. Above, cranes lifted each beam into position using hoisting systems. Lifting equipment was pre-arranged, ready for optimal timing to install each beam. From barge positioning and adjustments for wind direction and current, to lifting and lowering operations, every step required high precision to ensure successful installation. Photo source: EVNPMB3

According to EVNPMB3 representatives, one of the greatest challenges beyond control was hydrological conditions. In recent days, fluctuating river water levels have made it difficult to position barges, sometimes requiring work to pause or proceed slowly.

EVNPMB3 received support from the National Power System and Market Operation Company (NSMO) and Tri An Hydropower Company in regulating water discharge, facilitating barge movement and beam installation. Photo: Construction progress on April 29, prior to final closure. Source: EVNPMB3
