The Hoa Binh 500kV Substation Capacity Upgrade Project is a special-grade (Group B) energy project, with National Power Transmission Corporation (EVNNPT) serving as the investor, Northern Power Project Management Board representing the investor in project management and implementation, and Power Transmission Company No. 1 in charge of operation. The work was implemented at the existing Hoa Binh 500kV Substation, located in Tan Thinh Ward, Hoa Binh City, Hoa Binh Province (formerly), now Hoa Binh Ward, Phu Tho Province.

The project involves replacing two existing 500/220/35kV transformers, each rated at 450MVA, with two 900MVA transformers, thereby increasing the total installed capacity of the substation to 1,800MVA. In Phase 1, the AT2 transformer was replaced and energized by the end of 2025; Phase 2 involved replacing the AT1 transformer, and under the direction of EVN and EVNNPT, the project was completed in April 2026.

In the context where transformers at the Hoa Binh 500kV Substation have frequently operated under overload conditions, the capacity upgrade plays a significant role in ensuring the safe operation of the power system. It also enhances transmission capability from hydropower sources in the Northwest region, contributing to a stable power supply for Phu Tho Province, Hanoi Capital, and other northern localities - especially during periods of high load demand. This is an urgent project of great importance in ensuring national energy security.

The successful energization of the Hoa Binh 500kV substation capacity upgrade Project is also a meaningful activity by EVNNPT and NPTPMB to celebrate the 51st anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification (April 30, 1975 – April 30, 2026) and the 140th anniversary of International Workers’ Day (May 1, 1886 – May 1, 2026).
