Demand response simply means encouraging business customers to limit power use during peak hours and shift to off-peak hours. This will contribute to reducing the peak capacity of the power system during peak hours, reducing the situation of the power grid being overloaded, or improving the economic efficiency of the power system.
Reduce electricity costs
Sharing about the solution of demand response and load shifting in the area, Mr. Bui Trung Kien, Deputy General Director of Ho Chi Minh City Power Corporation, said that this is a solution to optimize production and business activities of the enterprise, at the same time contributing to ensuring continuous, stable, safe power supply and improving the quality of power supply services.
In the first 4 months of 2024, Ho Chi Minh City's power industry has signed with 1,579 large customers to implement demand response (if required). It signed load-shifting agreements with 1,304 industrial production customers with electricity consumption of 1 million kWh/year with an average shifting capacity potential of about 40MW.
According to preliminary statistics of the power industry, some businesses participating in the demand response and production time shifting program have reduced total electricity consumption by 25% - 30%, thereby saving nearly 15% of electricity bills. For example, at Corporation 28 (Ho Chi Minh City), the unit has shifted production time to off-peak hours, replaced almost 100% of lighting with LED lights, etc, helping to reduce monthly electricity bills by 20%.
Demand response can help businesses reduce electricity bills by up to 15%.
Ensuring electrical energy security
According to the forecast of the National Center for Hydrometeorology, the temperature in May will decrease but remain high. Therefore, Ho Chi Minh City Power Corporation calls on power customers to maintain and implement economical solutions to save costs for themselves and contribute to ensuring electricity supply.
Mr. Nguyen Phuong Duy, Deputy Head of the Energy Management Department - Ho Chi Minh City Department of Industry and Trade, said that power demand in Ho Chi Minh City is currently the highest since 2020. Therefore, adjusting and reducing power demand, contributing to reducing capacity during peak hours, reducing grid overload, and improving the economic efficiency of the power system is an urgent solution today.
