Commencement of power grid undergrounding project in Thanh An island commune (Ho Chi Minh City)

On November 30, Ho Chi Minh City Power Corporation (EVNHCMC) coordinated with Can Gio District People's Committee (HCMC) to organize the handover of the construction site for the project "Undergrounding and synchronizing power grid for the main power line rehabilitation project in Thanh An island commune, Can Gio district". This project is an item in EVNHCMC's  Customer Gratitude Month 2022, towards the 68th anniversary of the Vietnam Electricity Industry Traditional Day (December 21, 1954 - December 21, 2022).

The project of "Undergrounding the synchronizing power grid in Thanh An island commune, Can Gio district" is implemented with a total investment of nearly VND 30.2 billion, with the scale of undergrounding more than 10.1 km of low-voltage backbone cables and nearly 17.3 km of electrical cables to customer households. The work will carry out undergrounding the power grid and telecommunications cables, and synchronizing it with the work of the mainline improvement in Thanh An island commune, Can Gio district.

Undergrounding the power grid on the main and branch lines is the next stage in the plan of development and completion of the power grid for Thanh An island commune.

Mr. Le Thanh Tuan (front row, left) - Director of the Power Distribution Network Project Management Unit (EVNHCMC) and Mr. Pham Minh Chau - Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee, Chairman of Thanh An Commune People's Committee signing the handover of the construction site for Project "Undergrounding the power grid in Thanh An commune"

Before 2015, people in Thanh An island commune were supplied with power from on-site diesel generators, so the quality of electricity and the time of power supply were limited. Since April 2015, EVNHCMC has completed and energized the 22kV submarine cable across the sea to supply power to Thanh An island commune, Can Gio district, officially connecting the power grid to the island commune with the national grid. However, the low-voltage grid at the Thanh An island supplying power to each household is still a floating grid, not connected to a loop circuit, so the reliability of the power supply is not high. Therefore, EVNHCMC continues to invest in the project of "Undergrounding the power grid in Thanh An commune, Can Gio district" with the goal of improving the quality of power supply, at the same time avoiding the risk of grid failures and improving electrical safety for the people, especially in the rainy and stormy season.

Mr. Bui Hai Thanh - Deputy General Director of EVNHCMC said that undergrounding the low-voltage grid and completing the grid structure will also contribute to reducing power loss, increasing the reliability of power supply, and ensuring safety in operation to meet smart grid standards. In addition, the centralized management of the system of urban technical undergrounding infrastructure works (including electric wires, information lines, television cables, lighting and traffic lights, etc.) will contribute to reducing the occupancy of land area for technical infrastructure works and reducing the area of high-voltage grid protection corridors to increase green space for island communes in particular and the city in general.
