According to a report of the National Load Dispatch Center (A0), in the first half of 2021, the intense and prolonged heat led to a sudden increase in peak load demand (Pmax) of the North, up to approximately 21,500MW (on 2 June 2021). Currently, the North is also experiencing extremely hot days and the highest load is expected to reach 22,000MW (on 21 June 2021).

According to A0, in 2022, it is expected that the power system will be able to meet the load demand of the whole country and the Northern region. However, the power system in the North during the peak time in the summer of 2022 will be operated in an extremely difficult condition.
At the meeting, A0 reported 3 options to ensure power supply for the North in 2022, with the base scenario of 8.7% electricity growth rate compared to 2021; the high scenario of 15% growth rate compared to 2021 and in case the North completely overcomes impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, the regional economy recovers, the maximum capacity of the Northern power system may grow higher, reaching 18%.
The leader of EVN requested the National Power Transmission Corporation and the Northern Power Corporation to accelerate the implementation progress of power grid projects, especially projects to absorb energy from power plants. Power generation corporations are requested to ensure a high availability of power generation units, especially in the hot season; strengthening spare parts for thermal and hydropower power plants; investing in rooftop solar power system installation at office buildings to save electricity for self-use.
In addition, the power corporations should closely coordinate with large customers to effectively implement load adjustment programs; promoting the development of rooftop solar power in the Northern region.
