According to Ho Chi Minh City Electricity Corporation, so far, the rate of undergroundizing medium voltage electricity network in the whole city has increased from 25% in 2011 to 45% by the end of 2020, surpassing the plan (the plan is 35%). The city has basically completed undergroundized electrical network and telecommunications cable in the central area; completing the renovation and undergroundization of power grids and information lines at main lines in the inner city and inter-district roads. In addition, the power grid, information lines in the traffic improvement, repair and expansion projects are also synchronously undergroundized.
The Corporation has acquired and mastered the new technology used in the world, built a civilized and modern underground grid system. the City grid is increasingly standardized, structurally consolidated, has high operational provision and meets N-1 standard, some central areas meet N-2. In addition, the grid improvement and undergroundization projects have helped the Corporation well realize the targets of power loss, improving the reliability of power supply.
Streets in Ho Chi Minh City are clear, clean and beautiful after the power grid is turned undergroundization
After undergroundization, all existing poles and power lines will be recovered. Accordingly, the equipment previously installed on the poles such as transformers, switchgear (RMU) and low voltage cabinets must be re-arranged on the sidewalk locations. However, the sidewalk areas of some roads are quite narrow, not enough space for arrangement and installation of equipment; Some people do not want to install substations, electrical equipment in front of their house, etc. In addition, the undergroundization of electric cable system for lighting and traffic signals has not been implemented, so some power poles still have to be kept remained to support the power supply cables as well as the lighting lever of the lighting system.
The 2021-2025 period is the realization of the Project to Build Ho Chi Minh City into a smart city, along with a strong digital transformation under the direction of the City leaders. Therefore, the undergroundization of power grid projects combined with communication undergroundization will create a momentum for the construction of modern, smart, digital infrastructure, and so on.

Results of undergroundization of power grid installation in the 2011-2020 period by EVNHCMC
- Completing 240 undergroundization projects, with 1,025km of medium voltage grid and 1,730km of low voltage grid.
- The rate of undergroundization medium voltage electrical network in District 1, District 3: reaches 98%
- The rate of undergroundization in the inner areas of the remaining districts: reaches 60%.
