Energy-saving in industry in Vietnam estimated at around 20-30%

According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the industrial sector currently accounts for more than 50% of the total energy consumption nationwide. Surveys show that the potential for energy-saving in Vietnam's industry is estimated at around 20-30%.

Potential energy-saving space ground

According to calculations by Vietnam Electricity, the whole country has 3,068 key energy facilities with energy consumption of 1,000 TOE (tons of oil equivalent), equivalent to 6 million kWh of electricity/year or more. These businesses have an average electricity consumption of 80 billion kWh/year. If these facilities only need to save at least 2% of electricity consumption per year (according to Directive No. 20 of the Prime Minister on enhancing electricity saving from 2023 to 2025, the whole country will save about 1.6 billion kWh of electricity annually (equivalent to saving more than VND 3,200 billion in electricity costs).

Energy audits needed

Representative of Vietnam Technology Solutions Joint Stock Company (VETS) Thai Hoai Thanh said that the proportion of energy consumption of Vietnam's industrial sector accounts for the highest proportion (accounting for more than 50% of total energy consumption nationwide) and is increasing. The amount of greenhouse gas emissions from industrial sectors is also correspondingly high. Therefore, industrial enterprises need to be supported to improve energy efficiency.

Regarding technical solutions, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Ha - energy expert (RCEE-NIRAS Joint Stock Company) said that within the framework of the Vietnam - Denmark Energy Partnership Program (DEPP3) for the period 2020 - 2025 (DEPP3), the Ministry of Industry and Trade in coordination with the Danish Energy Agency conducts several studies on the Voluntary Agreement Program (VAS) to encourage the use of energy saving and efficiency in the industrial sector.

Enterprises participating in the Voluntary Agreement Program will receive technical support, such as supporting energy audits, conducting pre-feasibility studies, and feasibility studies, developing energy-saving investment project proposals to access bank loans, and preparing financial arrangement documents to access green finance and climate finance sources. The results achieved will contribute to the target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, reducing energy consumption, and complying with the provisions of the Law on Economical and Efficient Use of Energy to enhance competitiveness in export markets.
