Enhance electricity-saving solutions

Hanoi City is entering the peak period of hot weather, and electricity demand is forecasted to increase. To contribute to reducing the load on the electrical system, Hanoi City calls on agencies, units, businesses, and people in the locality to increase electricity-saving solutions.

According to forecasts of Vietnam Electricity, the demand for electricity in the summer of 2024 across the country tends to increase sharply compared to that of the same period last year, especially in the period from May to July, the amount of electricity consumed could increase by up to 13%, much higher than previous forecasts. In the North alone, electricity consumption is expected to increase by 17%.

The National Power System Dispatch Center expects that the reduced capacity of Hanoi city when the national power system lacks power (if it occurs) will have to be reduced from 0.91 to 4.25% of forecast peak capacity, equivalent to a shortage of 46 to 242 MW.

General Director of Hanoi Electricity Corporation (EVNHANOI) Nguyen Anh Tuan said that currently, the corporation is supplying power to more than 2.8 million customers. Of these, more than 2.52 million customers used electricity for domestic purposes, and 280 thousand customers used electricity for other purposes. In 2023, the largest electricity consumption of Hanoi Capital will be on July 27, 2023, at 101 million kWh, exceeding the largest electricity consumption (Apmax) of Ho Chi Minh City and 13 times larger than Central provinces accumulated, of which more than 57% is electricity for domestic consumption.

Assessing the difficulties and challenges that may be faced in 2024 and the following years, EVNHANOI has synchronously implemented solutions to improve the quality of technical management and operation of the power system; in particular, it is required to review, update, analyze, and evaluate load data for each region, and provide load forecasts close to reality to develop appropriate scenarios and power supply solutions.

The Corporation has directed units to focus on inspecting the line system and substations to soon detect and handle critical points; and proactively and actively accelerate the progress of investment projects to build power grids, especially urgent projects to operate before the summer. In addition, the corporation always focuses on propagating the economical and efficient use of electricity with the viewpoint "Save electricity today for a bright tomorrow".

This year, Hanoi city strives to achieve energy savings of 1.6 to 1.8% compared to the forecast energy demand; of which, saving at least 2.2% of total electricity consumption for consumer areas; set the goal of developing renewable energy to increase about 67 MW from waste electricity, bringing the total energy source from waste treatment of Hanoi city to about 129.3 MW; at the same time, strive to reduce the peak load of the city's power system by about 100 MW (not reducing electricity due to lack of source).

Deputy General Director of EVNHANOI Le Anh Duong recommended that customers actively participate in electricity saving and load demand response programs; In particular, proactively shift non-urgent electricity demand out of peak hours to reduce pressure on power supply during peak hours, especially for key energy users.
