Accordingly, the crucial activities include assessing potential and practicability of applying solar power solutions; determining available solar power capacity and power amount to contribute to the grid; orienting to build up the database for developing rooftop solar power, contributing to develop the city’s renewable energy as per the set targets.
With the target of developing solar power to reach 1GWp in 2020, the Prime Minister promulgated Decision No. 2068/2015/QD-TTg on approving the Strategy for developing renewable energy of Vietnam until 2030, vision toward 2050 and Decision No. 11/2017/QD-TTg on mechanisms to encourage developing solar power projects in Vietnam.
Implementing the Government’s policy, Ho Chi Minh City sets up the target to restructure power using toward increasing the rate of renewable energy, new energy to reach 1 - 1.74% of the city’s total consumption capacity and focusing on developing solar energy, particularly rooftop solar power.
According to the research result of World Bank, Ho Chi Minh City has a large potential to develop solar power thanks to over 316,500 roofs being possibly installed with this power system, attaining the capacity of around 6,379MWp.
