Recently, the Minister of Industry and Trade signed Decision No. 2795/QD-BCT promulgating the Science, Technology, and Innovation Strategy to serve the development of the Industry and Trade sector until 2030.

The overall objectives of the Strategy are:

The strategy sets out the main task orientation, focusing on innovating scientific and technological activities in a practical direction, meeting practical needs and development requirements of the Industry and Trade sector; Enhancing the potential of science, technology, and innovation, developing science and technology organizations in the Industry and Trade sector to become strong research subjects; Strongly promoting science, technology and innovation activities in businesses; Orienting the focus of research, development, application and transfer of technology to serve the development of the Industry and Trade sector.

In the field of energy industry and renewable energy: Research shall be done to innovate and modernize technology and equipment for power sources and power grids to improve efficiency, save energy, reduce production costs - supply power, and protect the environment.

Research and develop high-performance coal-fired power plant technology (using USC and A-USC steam parameters), using modern, high-performance environmental protection systems to reduce emissions of thermal power plants, ensuring environmental standards, regulations, and laws. Research and improve technology, using advanced measurement and control systems for operating coal-burning plants, applying coal combustion mixed with domestic anthracite and imported coal to improve efficiency, performance, and safety. in operating power plants. Research combustion solutions (Biomass, NH3, H2) in coal and gas-burning power plants to reduce greenhouse gas emissions into the environment.

In addition, research on smart power grids, integrating renewable energy sources into existing power grids as well as distributed sources, etc., in the field of energy industry and renewable energy. Develop technology to build multi-circuit lines of the same or different voltage levels to reduce the area of the line corridor. Apply new materials, using advanced new types of insulation such as composites and superconducting materials. Research and deploy the application of heat-resistant conductors to improve the load capacity of overhead conductors, use alloy conductors, and aluminum conductors with carbon fiber cores to reduce deflection and column size.

At the same time, research, develop, and put into use modern control technologies to ensure the optimal operation of the power system; modernize dispatching, operation, communication, control, and automation systems to serve domestic and regional power grid dispatching; apply modern digital technologies such as converged infrastructure technology, cloud computing technology, virtualization technology, artificial intelligence, big data processing technology, mobile computing technology, IoT technology, etc., to ensure information safety and security.

Apply advanced - smart metering technology to monitor customers' electricity usage, prevent loss in the electricity business, serve load forecasting research and management requirements; use meter technology to read data and receive data remotely; automate the distribution network combined with customer service and demand management. Research on modularization of distribution transformer stations and integrated mobile transformer stations. Synchronously construct and equip relay systems to protect the medium voltage grid, distribution automation systems (DAS), distribution grid management system (DMS), and SCADA of the distribution grid. Use condition-based equipment status diagnosis technology, online diagnosis, and hotline repair to improve the quality of operation and maintenance of the power distribution system.

Research, develop, and upgrade oil and gas production and processing technology with high efficiency; improve, optimize, and diversify products to serve sustainable development, protect resources and environment and enhance the competitiveness of the oil and gas industry, creating national products for the industry. Research and apply science and technology in coal processing (used for metallurgy, coal gasification to produce suitable gas products to serve the energy and industrial sectors, etc.,) to diversify products processed from coal to meet environmental protection requirements.

Research, apply, and transfer CO2 recovery, storage, and use technology in the energy sector (CCS, CCUS, etc.) to improve economic efficiency, protect the environment, and meet the commitments of Vietnam at the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Summit (COP26).

Research, apply, and develop technology for manufacturing energy equipment and apply new forms of energy, renewable energy, smart energy, and energy saving. Research, develop, and integrate renewable energy sources: solar, wind, energy storage batteries, etc., to maximally replace fossil energy sources; expand the application of power generation technology using urban waste, biomass, and solid waste for environmental protection and circular economic development; research, develop, apply and test technology to exploit geothermal energy, ocean waves, tides, ocean currents, and hydrogen energy.
