It is necessary to universalize the power saving model in shrimp farming in Soc Trang

This was a common opinion of the inter-ministerial delegation including Ministry of Industry and Trade, Ministry of Science and Technology, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and Vietnam Energy Conservation and Efficiency Association (VECEA) after their field trip to assess the power saving model in shrimp farming in Soc Trang province.

Save up to 38.7% of electricity

Two models of power saving in shrimp farming include: "Replacement of U-shaped bearing of paddlewheel aerator equipment (for generating oxygen) with rotary shaft" and "Coaxialization of motor and shaft of paddlewheel aerator, use of rotary shaft bearing roller instead of U-shaped bearing roller" were studied and piloted by Vietnam Electricity, Southern Power Corporation (EVNSPC) in Vinh Chau town, Tran De district, Cu Lao Dung and My Xuyen district (Soc Trang province).

The power saving model helps households save up to 38.7% of monthly power consumption.

After one year of piloting, the model has brought about practical effects. The "Replacement of U-shaped bearing of paddlewheel aerator equipment (for generating oxygen) with rotary shaft" has helped 161 households save 15.2% of power consumption, equivalent to VND 757 million per year; and the "Coaxialization of motor and shaft of paddlewheel aerator, use of rotary shaft bearing roller instead of U-shaped bearing roller" has helped saving up to 38.7% of electricity, equivalent to VND 1.9 billion VND per year.

Mr. Nguyen Van Nhiem, a member of Shrimp Farmer Association of My Thanh District, shared that this was a dual benefit model for shrimp farmers. In addition to saving electricity costs, the model contributes to minimizing damages of equipment, helping dissolve oxygen in ponds more stably, creating a good habitat for shrimps.

Appreciating this model, representatives of MOST and VECEA said that these two models are scientifically grounded, of great significance, and can be widely replicated in practice.

Mr. Tran Van Chuyen - Chairman of the People’s Committee of Soc Trang province stated that about 221 million kWh of electricity is used for shrimp farming every year, accounting for about 20% of the total power sales in the province - a very large proportion. Therefore, the province highly expects that this model will be soon multiplied to help save electricity, etc.

At present, EVNSPC has been carrying out the second pilot implementation of this model in Soc Trang province, providing rollers to 672 households with the total financial support of nearly VND 750 million.

In addition, in 2018, EVNSPC will implement a new solution under the project "Power saving solutions in shrimp farming in Soc Trang, Bac Lieu, Ca Mau provinces – in the pilot period 2017 - 2018". Specifically, the applied solution is "Substituting high performance electric motors, governors in combination with replacing rollers, coaxializing aerators and motor shafts." The combination of the new model and the two above mentioned models aims to encourage shrimp farmers to replace old motors (unknown origin, rewind motors) with high efficiency motors combined with governors and use of rollers for oxygen generating aerators.
