Lighting "the part of Fatherland facing great waves"

In 1991, the 35kV power grid crossed the waves, reached out to Cat Hai island (Hai Phong province), marking the first time an island district of Vietnam gets access to the national grid. Also from here, the journey to light up "the part of Fatherland facing great waves" has been carried out by the power industry with the highest determination.

Going over high sea to convey power to islands

EVN has made great efforts to arrange capital and quickly convey power to island communes and island districts of the Fatherland. In the period 2013–2018, EVN implemented a series of projects to convey power from the national grid to island districts and island communes, with a total investment of more than VND7,5 billion. As a result, power capacity and energy output supplied to island districts have also increased significantly. The scale of medium and low-voltage grid systems increased 350- 400% compared to that of before EVN took over and organized the sale of energy to the households.

During construction of power supply projects, EVN and contractors and construction units faced extreme weather conditions at sea, thunderstorms, and erratic tidal waters; hard construction conditions, depending entirely on geological characteristics of each sea area.

Overcoming all these difficulties, EVN has performed well the task of ensuring power supply in 11 island districts.

Creating momentum for economic development on islands and contribute to maintaining national sovereignty

From not connected to the grid, or only being supplied with power for a few hours a day, island districts have been supplied with sufficient power 24/24h with stable quality, thereby making a very important contribution to construction and protection of sovereignty over border and islands and to ensure security and defense. At the same time, it contributes to speeding up the electrification and modernization of agriculture and rural areas, to creating conditions for islanders to escape from poverty, step by step getting rich, creating a motive to promote marine economic.

Stable power is a prerequisite to promoting development of the service and tourism industries on islands. In some island districts, tourism services have boomed and become an economic development spearhead, such as Phu Quoc, Ly Son, Co To island, etc.

Ensuring power supply in the island districts across the country has always been an important political task that EVN focuses on implementation. EVN concentrates all its resources to ensure stable, continuous and reliable power in the island districts, with the aim not only contributing to the achievement of the islands economic development, improving the people’s life quality. Above all, it contributes to ensuring security and defense, and firmly protects the sovereignty of the country.

6 island districts connected to the national power grid: Van Don, Co To (Quang Ninh); Cat Hai (Hai Phong); Ly Son (Quang Ngai); Phu Quoc, Kien Hai (Kien Giang).

5 island districts using local power sources (combining diesel generators and solar and wind power): Bach Long Vy (Hai Phong); Con Co (Quang Tri); Truong Sa (Khanh Hoa); Phu Quy (Binh Thuan); Con Dao (Ba Ria-Vung Tau).
