Mong Duong 1 Thermal Power Plant (MD1) is the first plant of EVN to use circulating fluidized bed (CFB) technology. According to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Truong Duy Nghia - President of Vietnam Thermal Science and Technology Association, the advantage of this technology is that it can burn bad-quality coal (low calorific value, high sulfur content), fuel quality may vary in the wide range. Fuel in the boiler is recirculated until burnt out, thus reducing NOx, SOX emissions during fuel combustion.
To treat waste gas, the plant uses limestone burning method with desulfurized coal; combined with a ESP filter. This is a modern technology, with high reduction efficiency not inferior to other plants, properly meeting the environmental requirements. The plant is invested in a separate treatment system of domestic wastewater, and industrial wastewater so as to ensure that the quality of the output water meets the environmental standards.
Mr. Nguyen Tien Thanh - Director of Mong Duong Thermal Power Company said that the company invested in a system of transporting ash and slag to the landfill areas through a pumping system and pipeline by means of wet slag disposal; make sure not to spread dust into the environment. The slag disposal site is designed with a dam surrounding it, and the bottom and body of the dam are lined with HDPE layers to prevent water from the site entering into the environment. In addition, at the slag dump, water after depositing will be pumped back to the plant, recirculated, not discharged into the environment.
The power production and business are always associated with environmental protection right from the time that the plant is handed over and put into commercial operation. Mong Duong Thermal Power Company is proactive in seeking partners to cooperate in treating and consuming waste ash.

24/7 online environmental data
Thanks to the synchronous and effective solutions deployed at the plant, the results of online environmental monitoring, periodic monitoring of the parameters of exhaust gas, wastewater, cooling water, and the surrounding environment of MD1 are identified within the allowed limits. The online environmental monitoring system transmits data of thermal power plants to the Department of Natural Resources and Environment of Quang Ninh province, and at the same time connects it with Power Generation Corporation 3 for control. “These environmental data is transmitted directly to mobile phones of leaders of Quang Ninh province 24/7 online, it immediately alerts if abnormal parameters occur. The environmental work, the supervision of monitoring parameters of emissions, wastewater, etc., have been implemented very seriously,” said Deputy Chairman of Quang Ninh Province Cao Tuong Huy.
Currently, the Company is completing the installation of an electronic board, located at the gate of the plant, to display environmental parameters, and local people can easily monitor and supervise the quality of the plant's environmental parameters such as cooling water, exhaust gas, temperature, etc. Plant leaders said that plant is always ready to make every information transparent, so that authorities and people can easily monitor the environment.
However, Mong Duong Thermal Power Company still has difficulty in handling ash and slag as backfilling material. Currently, standards for using ash and slag for leveling, road reinforcement, and building materials have been issued by functional agencies; The company is certified for ash and slag standards in accordance with these standards and regulations. Therefore, the Company proposes the competent authorities to consider omitting the procedures for adjusting and applying for each project license and permitting the investors to decide on the use of ash and slag as leveling materials. The consumption of ash and slag, thereby, will be faster promoted, contributing to ensuring a good living environment, towards sustainable development.

- From 2016 to 31 December 2019: Approximately 70% of bottom slag volume consumed (278,000/ 540,000 tons)
- From January 2020 - now: 100% bottom slag volume consumed
- 15% of fly ash reused as bricks and cement; The remaining 85% transported for leveling grounds.
