Nearly 20 years after implementing Phu Quoc development project: Electricity contributes to creating momentum for economic growth

On 31 March 2024, the People's Committee of Kien Giang Province organized a conference to summarize Decision No. 178/2004/QD-TTg on the overall development of Phu Quoc island, Kien Giang Province until 2010 and vision to 2020. Recently, electricity has contributed to creating momentum for the island district to develop, improve competitiveness, and attract strong investment in the area, especially tourism and the marine economy.

The conference was chaired by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh; Secretary of Kien Giang Provincial Party Committee Do Thanh Binh.

Representatives of Vietnam Electricity are EVN’s President and CEO Nguyen Anh Tuan; leader of the Southern Power Corporation (EVNSPC).

Installing power cables across oceans

With unremitting efforts, on 2 February 2014, EVNSPC officially energized and put into operation the 110kV submarine cable project across the Ha Tien - Phu Quoc sea with the ability to transmit capacity up to 131MVA. This is the longest submarine cable project in Southeast Asia, with a total investment of more than VND 2,300 billion to connect the national power grid to the island, completely replacing the diesel power source on the island.

To date, the scale of medium voltage and low voltage lines and distribution substations has increased nearly 100 times, ensuring electricity for the number of customers increased 10.5 times.

According to EVNSPC data, Phu Quoc's electricity load in the period 2004 - 2010 grew by an average of 17%/year; the period 2010 - 2020 reached 27%/year; The period 2020 - 2023 reached 14%/year. Phu Quoc is the area with the fastest-growing electricity load growth in Kien Giang province and is also the area with the highest proportion of commercial and service customers.

Awaken potential for economic development

Notably, since the time there was grid electricity, electricity prices on Pearl Island have also returned to an average level equivalent to the mainland, down nearly 50% compared to the time when there was no national power grid.

To meet the island's rapidly increasing electricity load demand, EVNSPC has increased the capacity of the substation and continued to invest in many power works. Among them, the Kien Binh - Phu Quoc 220kV power line with a total investment of up to VND 2,212 billion enhances power supply. After energizing, the prolonged overload on the Phu Quoc island distribution power grid was basically resolved, and the reliability of the power supply was also increasingly improved.

Continue to accompany development of Phu Quoc island

Speaking at the conference, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh emphasized that Phu Quoc has a particularly important and specific role and mission for economic development, national security, and defense as well as developing the country's tourism culture development. After 20 years of implementing Decision No. 178/2004/QD-TTg on the overall development of Phu Quoc island, Phu Quoc has basically achieved the planned targets: Fast growth rate, positive economic structure transition, impressive investment attraction, infrastructure (system power, roads, etc.) basically ensures quality, etc.
