Resources are invested in promoting fly ash and slag consumption and protecting the environment

According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade, Hai Phong Thermal Power Joint Stock Company (a subsidiary of Power Generation Corporation No.2, Vietnam Electricity) has been investing a lot of resources in boosting the consumption and reuse of fly ash and slag and enhancing environmental protection.

Hai Phong Thermal Power Joint Stock Company is operating 2 power plants including 4 units with a total capacity of 1,200MW. The company annually consumes about 3.2 million tons of coal and generates about 1 million tons of fly ash and slag, in which the amount of slag ash at the bottom of the furnace is about 150,000 tons, the amount of fly ash is about 850,000 tons.

Accordingly, from 2016 to 2021, the total amount of fly ash being consumed by the company reached nearly 4.8/4.9 million tons and the amount of slag ash being consumed was more than 1.65/0.86 million tons. Thus, the amount of fly ash and slag stored in reservoirs has been consumed.

General Director of Hai Phong Thermal Power Joint Stock Company Duong Son Ba said that at present, the company's fly ash and slag created from the power generation process are all consumed, including the amount of fly ash and slag in the reservoirs. Currently, 100% of the fly ash of the company has been consumed.

Out of the amount of slag (accounting for only about 15% of the waste), about 30% is consumed daily, the rest is disposed at the reservoirs and 2 companies Hung Ngoc and My Son are undertaking the full exploitation.

Up to now, in the company's slag reservoirs, only a small amount of slag at the bottom mixed with water can't be exploited and another small amount is left by the company to serve the construction of small items.

Not only promoting the consumption of fly ash and slag, but in recent years Hai Phong Thermal Power Joint Stock Company has also spent a lot of resources to invest in environmental protection. In particular, the company has applied advanced technologies and equipment in the construction of environmental protection works such as production wastewater treatment system; domestic wastewater treatment system; oil-contaminated wastewater treatment system; electrostatic precipitators (ESP); flue gas desulphurization system (FGD); applying fuel staging combustion technology to minimize the possibility of NOx generation.

Wastewater after being treated to meet environmental requirements is brought to the slag discharge system to be used in the ash and slag discharge process, not directly discharged into the environment.

According to EVN, currently, 100% of thermal power plants and thermal power companies under EVN have developed and implemented their plans of fly ash, slag and gypsum consumption; at the same time, they have registered for certificate standards and certificate regulation, which certifies that the ash and slag are eligible to be reused for specific purposes such as an additive for cement, concrete, leveling materials, roadbed for automobiles, etc.
