The country saved 436,000kWh in one light-off hour

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, exciting response events were not organized like the previous years, but the Earth Hour 2020 campaign was still widely attended by people and businesses. In one hour of turning off the lights (from 20h30 - 21h30 on March 28, 2020), the whole country saved an electricity amount of 436,000 kWh (equivalent to about 812.9 million VND).

The Earth Hour 2020 campaign is organized by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) in Vietnam under the sponsor of the Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment.

Under the theme of "Biodiversity loss", Earth Hour 2020 warns of the depletion of resources and changes in living habitats on earth that have caused widespread biodiversity loss due to an unprecedented increase in consumption, leading to a sudden increase in demand for energy, land, water, etc.

Earth Hour 2020 calls for organizations and individuals to work together with the aim of contributing to promoting initiatives of consumer behavior changing such as: Saving energy, limiting the use of plastic, saying no to wildlife consumption, etc., joining hands with the international community to better achieve the goals to cope with climate change and protect the green planet.

Message of Earth Hour 2020

Taking place in the context of COVID-19 pandemic with complicated developments in the world as well as in Vietnam, Earth Hour 2020 is organized online instead of response events with many participants like the years before.

Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Hoang Quoc Vuong said that the implementation of energy-saving in Vietnam was concretized by the Law on Economical and Efficient Use of Energy, the Renewable Energy Development Strategy, and the national target programs of promoting the economical and efficient use of energy. In February 2020, the Politburo issued Resolution No. 55/NQ-TW on the orientation of the national energy development strategy until 2030, with a vision to 2045, which confirms the policy of the Party and the State in prioritizing the exploitation and development of renewable energy sources and strongly promoting the economical and efficient use of energy.

With simple actions, to set air conditioner temperature above 26 degrees C, each person joins hands with the community to save energy and protect the environment.

The Earth Hour campaign in Vietnam has been organized since 2009, receiving the participation and response of people of all strata, contributing to saving a huge amount of energy, serving socio-economic development, and ensuring national energy security.

Since 2009, EVN has been one of the typical organizations which have cared for and actively coordinated to implement the Earth Hour program. Particularly in 2020, with the goal of renewing communication activities in response to the campaign in the direction of creativity, practicality and efficiency, EVN and its member units have carried out communication on electricity saving and responded to the Earth Hour 2020 campaign through information, images, video-clips, etc. on their websites and social networks.

Power corporations, power companies of provinces and cities have carried out communication activities on electricity saving and environmental protection at their customer transaction locations and headquarters throughout March 2020; at the same time, encouraging organizations, agencies and customers to switch off lights and unnecessary electrical equipment at the time of the light-off event in response to Earth Hour 2020.
