Vietnam-Norway seeks cooperation solution for liquefied natural gas for power production

On 4 November 2019, in Hanoi, the Norwegian Chamber of Commerce and the Embassy of Vietnam co-organized a Workshop on liquefied natural gas (LNG).

Mr. Le Hai Dang – Head of Strategy and Development of EVN making speech at the Workshop.

At this Workshop, Mr. Le Hai Dang – Head of EVN Strategy and Development Board said: “According to the revised Electricity Planning VII, in the period 2025 - 2030, Vietnam will need to build new LNG gas power plants with a total of capacity of 15,000 - 19,000MW to meet the growing power demand in the country. However, after 2020, the gas supply will be forecast to decrease due to the decrease in  domestic gas reserves and the slow development of new gas fields. Therefore, Vietnam needs to import more LNG to supplement fuel for these power plants in the southern region.

According to Vietnam’s gas industry development plan to 2025, with a vision to 2035, Vietnam will have to import 1 - 4 billion m3 of LNG per year in the period of 2021-2025, increasing up by 6-10 billion m3 per year thereafter. About 75% of imported LNG is used for power plants. Therefore, the Vietnamese Government encourages domestic and foreign companies in the field of LNG to cooperate with one another. This makes the LNG market in Vietnam become “exciting” than ever.

Norwegian Ambassador in Vietnam, Ms. Grete Løchen said: Norway is the leading country with LNG solutions. Norwegian LNG businesses operate in every link of the supply chain, from LNG production to gasification, transportation and power generation from LNG.

In particular, Norway is the first country in the world to develop floating LNG stations, which is both cost-effective, reliable in solution and short in construction duration. Norway is also famous for its small - scale ship building solutions to transport LNG from the station to the end users in the industry.

LNG is the cleanest fossil fuel. In the context of current energy restructuring in Vietnam and the region, LNG is a great alternative to coal.

At the workshop, participants focused on two main topics: LNG for electric power and small-scale LNG distribution to end users in industries such as power plants, chemical production, fertilizer, etc.

The workshop is a forum for Norwegian companies to seek partners to invest and develop the LNG industry in Vietnam, including equipment facilities and LNG hubs, FSRU (LNG transport and storage vessels), floating LNG power plant, small vessels and LNG distribution equipment, feasible financial options for LNG project, etc. The event is also an opportunity to promote positive dialogue among  manufacturers, LNG users and relevant parties, thereby strengthening a common understanding of global LNG market trends and exploring cooperation opportunities.
