Vietnam and Laos strengthen bilateral cooperation in the field of energy

The Conference on Cooperation and Development of Industry, Trade, Energy and Mining Sectors between Vietnam and Laos took place in Da Nang City. Minister of Industry and Trade of Vietnam Tran Tuan Anh, Minister of Industry and Trade of Laos and Minister of Ministry of Energy & Mining of Laos co-chaired the Conference.

At the Conference, leaders of the three ministries reviewed and evaluated the cooperation status in the fields of trade, industry and energy between the two countries in 2017.

In the fields of industry and energy, one of the outstanding cooperation outcomes of is the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Government of Viet Nam and the Government of Laos on cooperation in development of hydropower projects in Laos, an electricity source to be provided to Vietnam, power system interconnection and power exchanging between the two countries.

The two sides have kept on accelerating the negotiation and conclusion progress of other agreements such as: Vietnam - Laos Inter-Governmental Agreement on My Ly – Nam Mo 1 Hydropower Plant Project, study on developing a 500 kV super high voltage transmission line project to import electricity to Vietnam.

The two sides agreed to continue taking some measures to strengthen the cooperation such as: support for early approval of a permanent disaster recovery plan at Xe-ka-man 3 Hydropower Plant; development of power plant projects, power interconnection and trading between the two nations.
