Ca Mau determines to unblock electricity flow

As a coastal province far from the center, Ca Mau is gradually becoming a bright spot in terms of exploiting its natural potential to generate power.

According to Power Plan VIII, by 2030, Ca Mau province will put into operation an additional 2,309MW of wind power, 100MW of solar power, and 117MW of rooftop solar power. Ca Mau province is coordinating with ministries and sectors to prepare to export electricity from offshore wind power with a capacity of up to 12,000 - 15,000MW, depending on technical and legal conditions. This is a great leap, putting Ca Mau in the group of leading localities in the country in renewable energy.

Potential for coastal wind power development in Ca Mau is huge.

According to the Department of Industry and Trade of Ca Mau province, up to now, the province has had 26 wind power projects approved for investment, with a total capacity of 1,612.2MW. Of these, 14 projects (694.2MW) have been put into commercial operation; 4 projects are under construction; 6 projects are carrying out investment and construction procedures; 2 projects have issued invitation documents.

In addition, 22 projects with a total capacity of 1,393MW have been approved for planning and are being researched and surveyed by investors. Regarding solar power, Ca Mau Power Company is currently managing 2,827 rooftop solar power customers, with a total capacity of 295,494MWp.

For all the above renewable energy projects, Ca Mau Power Company has been and is continuing to support, coordinate, and ensure the combination of production, storage, and use of renewable electricity, contributing to reducing emissions and moving towards building a “green electricity ecosystem” model. Not only taking advantage of and exploiting the province’s potential to the fullest, but this is also an important factor in helping to reduce pressure on the traditional power grid.

In fact, wind power projects operating in Ca Mau are not operating at full capacity, especially during windy months. The reason is that the power transmission system is not yet capable of being connected to the grid.

To become the energy center of the country, Ca Mau province has been coordinating with ministries and branches to upgrade the system of transformer stations and 500kV, 220kV, and 110kV lines. Especially the Bac Lieu - Thot Not 500kV line to release capacity for LNG and wind power projects.

In addition, the industry and trade sector has established working groups to support and promptly handle difficulties and problems for investors implementing projects, ensuring progress to operate an additional 3,200MW of LNG power, 2,309MW of wind power, 100MW of concentrated solar power, and 117MW of rooftop solar power by 2030.

On November 11, the People's Committee of Ca Mau province worked with the National Power Transmission Corporation (EVNNPT) on the implementation of investment and construction of power transmission projects in the province, focusing on the  Bac Lieu - Thot Not 500kV LNG transmission line project. The two sides agreed on a roadmap and resolved difficulties to commence this line in early 2026.
