At the meeting, Mr. Nguyen Anh Tuan provided an overview of the development of Vietnam’s national power system, highlighting the major challenges currently facing the electricity sector.

Vietnam's installed power generation capacity has reached approximately 85,000MW, comprising a diverse energy mix of hydropower, coal-fired thermal, gas-fired, and renewable energy sources. Notably, renewable energy now accounts for about 28% of the total capacity.

According to the updated Power Development Plan VIII, Vietnam aims to expand total installed capacity to around 183,000MW by 2030, with a strong emphasis on developing renewable energy and LNG power plants.

In line with the Government of Vietnam’s commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 under the COP26 pledge, EVN is actively implementing synchronized solutions, including technology upgrades and transitioning coal-fired plants to cleaner fuels. Additionally, upgrading and modernizing the transmission grid has become a critical priority to ensure safe, stable, and sustainable system operations amid the rapid increase in renewable energy sources.

EVN’s leadership emphasized that ensuring a secure power supply amid rising renewable energy penetration is a significant challenge. With its extensive experience and advanced technologies, the Czech Republic is viewed by EVN as a potential partner that can offer valuable technology solutions and operational models suited to Vietnam’s conditions.

Minister Lukas Vlcek expresses hope to strengthen energy cooperation with EVN in coming period

Minister Lukas Vlcek noted that the Czech Republic’s power generation is currently dominated by thermal and nuclear energy. The country has also set a target to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, with a planned energy mix comprising approximately 50% nuclear and 50% renewable energy.

To meet this target, the Czech Government and its enterprises are investing heavily in developing new renewable energy sources, expanding and modernizing the transmission grid, and upgrading thermal power plants to transition to cleaner fuels.

The Minister also shared that many Czech enterprises and research institutes are eager to collaborate with Vietnam on technology transfer and experience sharing in areas such as nuclear power, thermal power innovation, and renewable energy development.

The Czech side also proposed expanding cooperation with EVN in training and human resource development, particularly in training engineers and managers for the operation and maintenance of nuclear and thermal power plants, as well as in related high-tech sectors.

Both sides agreed to maintain regular exchanges and enhance connections between regulatory agencies, businesses, and research institutes of both countries. They also committed to jointly exploring and developing concrete cooperation programs aligned with the sustainable development strategies of Vietnam and the Czech Republic in the coming period.
