EVN delegation inspecting preparations for dry season electricity production at Vinh Tan 2 Thermal Power Plant, February 2025
Proactive solutions “from early, from afar”
This year’s drought and severe heat are forecast to be more severe than in the previous years, posing a major challenge to the electricity industry in general and EVN in particular. In this context, thermal power - accounting for nearly 50% of the total national power capacity - still plays a particularly important role in ensuring energy security. With this spirit, EVN and its member units have proactively implemented many solutions to ensure power supply in the 2025 dry season, with the top priority being adequate fuel preparation.
Since the end of 2024, thermal power units in EVN have proactively worked and negotiated with the Vietnam National Coal and Mineral Industries Group (TKV) and Dong Bac Corporation on the 2025 coal supply contract and have completed related stages since the end of last year.
Most recently, the Steering Committee for Coal Supply for Power Production (including EVN, TKV, and Dong Bac Corporation) had a meeting at the end of February 2025 in Binh Thuan province to prepare for the peak dry season months, as well as solutions to ensure coal supply for EVN's thermal power plants throughout the year. All parties agreed to continue to cooperate closely, make efforts to carry out the political tasks assigned by the Party and the State, and strictly implement the Government's instructions to ensure energy security.
For the EVN side, thermal power plants in the Group have made careful preparations to ensure sufficient coal according to the electricity production plan and maintain a reasonable coal inventory level. For example, in Quang Ninh, Uong Bi Thermal Power Plant always maintains coal in stock at over 80,000 tons, and Quang Ninh Thermal Power Plant also proactively maintains a minimum inventory of 140,000 tons of coal during peak periods to ensure uninterrupted production. Nghi Son 1 Thermal Power Plant (Thanh Hoa province) also ensures an inventory according to EVN's prescribed standards, in which the inventory during peak months of the dry season is over 105,000 tons.
In addition to fuel, equipment maintenance is also given special attention by units. Typically, Duyen Hai Thermal Power Company (Tra Vinh province) - the unit managing and operating Duyen Hai 1, Duyen Hai 3, and Duyen Hai 3 expansion thermal power plants - also actively deploys solutions to ensure continuous operation.
Thermal power plants also actively apply science and technology to improve production efficiency. Typically, at Mong Duong Thermal Power Company, in addition to implementing many management and technical solutions, the Company also promotes the technology application in monitoring and analyzing operational data such as RMS, Elogbook, RCM systems... to improve production efficiency, increase stability and ensure safety for generators. Particularly, the Company focuses on applying Big Data analysis technology in operations to detect weaknesses in the production process and provide timely improvement solutions.
