As the country enters the 2025 At Ty Lunar New Year holiday, construction on major power projects such as the Quang Trach I Thermal Power Plant (TPP) (Quang Binh province) and the Hoa Binh Hydropower Plant (HPP) Expansion (Hoa Binh province) continues without interruption.

To work through Lunar New Year holiday...

The Quang Trach I TPP project (2 units, total capacity of 1,403MW) is invested by Vietnam Electricity (EVN), with the Power Project Management Board 2 (EVNPMB2) as the representative investor. The project is being constructed in Vinh Son Hamlet, Quang Dong Commune, Quang Trach District, Quang Binh Province.

According to Mr. Do Thanh Tai, Deputy Director of EVNPMB2 and Director of the Quang Trach Power Center Project Management Board, Unit 1 of the Quang Trach I TPP will be connected to the grid before September 2, 2025, following the directives of the Prime Minister. To meet this goal, EVNPMB2 and all on-site officers, engineers, and workers are ready to work through Tet while strictly adhering to safety standards to meet the approved quality and schedule requirements and comply with legal regulations on construction investment.

Construction Site of Quang Trach I Thermal Power Plant

Contractors have mobilized approximately 500–600 engineers and workers, along with 200 pieces of equipment, vehicles, and machinery, to support installation work at the construction site. All are united in their determination to connect Unit 1 to the grid as directed by the Prime Minister.

According to reports from EVNPMB2, the project’s progress is currently about 81% complete. Some specific work packages include finishing the freshwater pipeline system, the pump station being 87% complete, and the fabrication and erection of the coal storage steel structure and windproof walls being approximately 70% completed.

Installing Cooling Water Pipelines - Quang Trach I TPP

Currently, contractors are urgently installing the intake and discharge cooling water pipeline system. This is a large-scale installation task, involving nearly 11km of pipeline, with pipe sections measuring 3.8m in diameter, 18m in length, and weighing 30 tons each.

Meanwhile, at the Hoa Binh HPP Expansion site, the working atmosphere remains highly intense as Tet approaches. This is a special-grade construction project with a scale of two generating units and a total designed capacity of 480MW, built on the right bank of the existing Hoa Binh HPP dam. EVN has assigned the EVNPMB1 as the representative investor.

On the 27th day of the lunar calendar, workers of Construction Joint Stock Company 47 (C47) – the project’s contractor – were carrying out the water conveyance tunnel No. 1, aiming to complete two slip-form blocks. The construction of the water conveyance tunnel is a crucial part of the project, ensuring both generating units can start operation in 2025. Mr. Tran Huu Phap, Deputy Commander of the C47 Construction Site, stated that recognizing the urgency of the project, C47 has arranged for workers to remain on duty and continue construction throughout the Tet holiday, joining forces with the investor to ensure the project is completed on schedule in 2025.

With high morale and determination, the Hoa Binh HPP Expansion project closely follows its planned schedule. By the end of January 2025, progress in key construction areas, such as reinforced concrete works at the intake area and structural concrete works for vertical shafts No. 1 and No. 2, has met or surpassed project plans.
