In recent years, Quang Tri Province has made significant progress in its renewable energy development strategy, particularly with 21 wind power projects that have entered commercial operation with a total capacity of 994.2MW.

According to the Quang Tri Department of Industry and Trade, the total planned power capacity under the National Power Development Plan PDP8 and the revised PDP8 of Quang Tri province up to 2030 is 14,415MW, and 3,872.8MW for the 2031 - 2035 period.

By the end of July 2025, the total capacity that has entered commercial operation in the province reached 1,459.8MW, including: 21 wind power plant projects with a total capacity of 994.2MW; 11 hydropower plant projects with a total capacity of 181.5MW; 4 ground-mounted solar power plant projects with a total capacity of 159.2MW (199MWp); and 1,204 rooftop solar power systems with a total capacity of 126.7MW.

In addition to the projects already in commercial operation, Quang Tri also has projects that have been granted investment policy decisions by competent authorities and are currently being implemented by investors, with scheduled operation timelines up to 2030.

As of now, Quang Tri Province has 21 wind power plant projects in commercial operation with total capacity of 994.2MW.

Among the major energy projects in the province, the most prominent is the Quang Trach 1 Thermal Power Plant, invested by EVN, with a capacity of 1,403MW. Once operational, it is expected to supply about 8.5 billion kWh of electricity annually. The project is currently being expedited, with oil-firing trial operations scheduled for August 19, 2025, and commercial operation expected in May 2026.

Another key project is the Hai Lang 1 LNG Power Plant (1,500MW), invested by a joint venture of T&T Group, HEC, KOGAS, and KOSPO, which is expected to be commissioned during the 2028 - 2029 period, supplying approximately 9.75 billion kWh per year.

The Quang Trach II LNG Thermal Power Plant, also invested by EVN with a capacity of 1,500MW, is currently completing its feasibility study report and is expected to begin commercial operation in 2030.

Additionally, the Quang Tri Combined-Cycle Gas Turbine Power Plant (340MW), invested by Gazprom EP International (Russian Federation) and fueled by natural gas, is also scheduled to commence operation in 2030.

In terms of wind power, 11 projects with a total capacity of 424MW have been approved for investment and are currently under development. Among them, three projects - Huong Linh 4, Hai Anh, and Tan Hop - with a combined capacity of 108MW, are expected to be commissioned by the end of the third quarter of 2025, while the remaining projects are scheduled to come into operation in 2026 and 2027.

In addition, Quang Tri Province is also advancing its hydropower sector. The La Trong Hydropower Plant (22MW) is scheduled to begin operation in October 2025, while seven other small-scale hydropower projects with a total capacity of 93MW are under construction and expected to be completed between 2026 and 2027.

According to the provincial Department of Industry and Trade, wind, solar, and hydropower projects have made significant contributions to the province’s industrial growth. With ongoing projects, the province is actively ensuring project progress and implementation, thereby contributing to the realization of its goals for green and sustainable economic development in alignment with national energy security objectives.
