Building 2 highest 500kV electric poles in Vietnam

These are Poles No. 05 and 06 crossing the Hau River of the 500kV Song Hau - Duc Hoa transmission line project. The construction and installation of the poles as well as cable pulling at these two locations is very complicated, hence it exerts a great influence on the overall progress of the project.

The 500kV Song Hau - Duc Hoa transmission line project is invested by the National Power Transmission Corporation (EVNNPT), which is being accelerated in progress by the Project Management Board of Southern Power Projects (SPMB) and related units to be energized for phase 1 in December 2019.

Mr. Dang Phan Tuong - EVNNPT Chairman of Board checks the construction progress of 2 poles 05 and 06 crossing Hau River of 500kV Song Hau - Duc Hoa transmission line

In particular, the 2 poles crossing the Hau River are the 2 highest poles in Vietnam so far.  Each pole is 175m in height. EVNNPT has instructed SPMB (project management unit) and Power Transmission Company 4 (supervision consulting, will take over the line for operation  management) to focus on coordinating and supporting Power Construction Joint Stock Company 1 (PCC1) in constructing the poles on schedule and ensuring quality for these 2 locations, as well as the whole project.

According to Mr. Vo Hong Quang - Deputy General Director of PCC1, due to the location of two poles near the river bank, the construction site is very narrow, difficult for gathering materials. Each location has more than 1,000m3 of concrete, so it takes nearly 4 months to complete the pole foundations.

To transport the poles (weight of about 800 tons/pole) to the designated locations, PCC1 had to hire a large barge for transportation and use 2 cranes (450 tons and 50 tons) to serve the construction. However, the 450 ton truck crane can only support the erection of the poles to the height of 100 m. For the higher parts of pole, PCC1 shall erect them manually.

It is worth mentioning that when performing the construction on height, due to the influence of the wind, hence there is large vibration by the poles, causing a lot of difficulties for the construction process. The combination between machinery and using manual measures, PCC1 shall completely erect them within 2 months for each pole position.

PCC1 is striving to complete the conductor pulling for this pole section before 15 December 2019. Mr. Quang added: The distance between the two poles crossing the Hau River is 1,378m, but the whole length of cable pulling is nearly 2,900m. Meanwhile, the Hau River is an international transportation route managed by the Southern Port Authority. This river section often carries large ships, the pulling of conductors, lightning wire, optical cables will be performed by PCC1 with the use of flying equipment to place the jig cable to serve the pulling for this pole.

According to Mr. Truong Huu Thanh - Director of SPMB, the energizing progress in phase 1 of the 500kV Song Hau - Duc Hoa transmission line in the middle of December 2019 to supply power for Song Hau 1 Thermal Power Plant to serve the trial generation. The items of this phase includes: The length of line is 36.65 km with 78 pole locations. By this time, the construction contractors have completed 78/78 foundation locations, 64/78 poles have been completed and the conductor pulling is in progress.

In phase 2 of the project, there are only 96.35 km with 190 poles, SPMB has handed over 24 foundation locations, approving the compensation plan for 164 households, inventorying and determining the compensation rates for 1,958 households. Expectedly, the energizing for phase 2 will be completed by the end of 2020.

The 500kV Song Hau - Duc Hoa transmission line project has a total length of 133km, is designed with two circuits, the phase conductor consists of 4 ACSR 600/76 wires, especially for the section crossing  of the Hau and Tien Rivers, using strengthened phase conductor of 04 AACSR 635/117 wires.

This line will transmit the capacity of Song Hau 1 and Song Hau 2 power plants (Song Hau 1 power plants) in the Southwest region to the load center of  Ho Chi Minh and neighboring provinces.
