Completing and energizing the first digital substation

At 5:33 am on April 19, 2021, the Northern Regional Power Project Management Board (NPMB) in coordination with relevant organizations energized and accepted Thuy Nguyen 220 kV substation (Hai Phong). This is the first digital substation project invested by the National Power Transmission Corporation (EVNNPT).

Thuy Nguyen 220 kV substation project includes 2 220/110/22 kV – 250 MVA transformers, one of which is installed in this phase. The 220 kV side uses the diagram of two bus-bar systems, with a ring bus-bar having 12 bays, 7 of those bays are equipped. The 110 kV side uses the diagram of two bus-bar systems with a ring bus-bar having 21 bays, 13 of which are equipped.

The substation covers an area of about 40,100 m², located in Dong Son commune and Kenh Giang commune, Thuy Nguyen district, Hai Phong city.

This is a class I energy project of group B, with a total investment cost of more than VND 348 billion, being invested by EVNNPT, managed and implemented by NPMB, and will be operated by Power Transmission Company No. 1.

Thuy Nguyen 220 kV substation (Hai Phong) has just been successfully energized

Mr. Luu Viet Tien - Deputy General Director of EVNNPT said: Thuy Nguyen 220 kV substation has many advantages including reduction of about 80% of copper cables; saving costs of transportation, construction and installation of copper cables, smaller area of cable trenches; smaller space for installation of protection and control equipment, etc.

Digital substation is not only a new technology in Vietnam but also in advanced countries. Before implementing the project, EVNNPT held many seminars with major equipment manufacturers in the world such as Siemens, ABB, GE, etc., however the number of 220 kV substations with the same scale as Thuy Nguyen 220 kV substations using digital substation technology is very few.

The energizing and putting into operation of Thuy Nguyen 220 kV substation will ensure power supply for the loads, meeting the socio-economic development needs of Thuy Nguyen district, Hai Phong city and surrounding areas, reducing power loss and strengthening the interconnection, safety, stability and flexibility in power system operation.

At the same time, in the process of investing and operating Thuy Nguyen 220 kV substation, EVNNPT will review and evaluate the advantages vs disadvantages, benefits vs costs, investment efficiency of digital substation to serve as a basis for making decision on selecting the digital substation protection and control technology in the future.
