Demand response - current situation and solutions to ensure power supply

This is the topic of the conference organized by Saigon Businessman Magazine, Vietnam Electricity (EVN), and Ho Chi Minh City Power Corporation (EVNHCMC) jointly organized on April 24, in Ho Chi Minh City.

According to statistics, commercial electricity output in the first 3 months of the year reached 62.52 billion kWh, an increase of 13.85% over the same period in 2023. In particular, high growth in load component groups: industry - construction (10.73%), agriculture (16.19%), trade – hotel – restaurant (18.63%). Commercial electricity for domestic use increased by 18.07%, especially in the Southern region (including 21 southern provinces increased by 19.30% and Ho Chi Minh City increased by 15.18%).

Workshop 'Demand response - current situation and solutions to ensure power supply'

Currently, Ho Chi Minh City is in the peak period of heat, with temperatures sometimes reaching 40 degrees. Prolonged hot weather caused the city's power consumption in the first days of April 2024 to continuously increase and surpass the peak in 2023.

In the context of the unfavorable hydrological situation of hydroelectric reservoirs and high fuel prices such as coal and gas, the power supply for production, business and people's lives in the first 3 months of 2024 has been guaranteed well.

Vice president of EVN Vo Quang Lam provides information about the power consumption situation in the first 3 months of 2024

However, facing the hot weather that is forecast to come soon and the number of hot days continuously last, operating the power system will face many difficulties during the peak months (April, May, June, and July). EVN has directed units to continue to synchronously implement many solutions, in which promoting communication on electricity saving among the people is one of the solutions of top concern.

Demand response - an important and urgent solution

At the conference, delegates presented a number of presentations on solutions to save electricity and demand response (DR), such as legal bases related to adjusting electrical load; the importance of electricity DR in power supply in the current situation; Results of mobilizing businesses to participate in adjusting load and shifting production hours in Ho Chi Minh City - Advantages, disadvantages and suggestions.

Deputy General Director of EVNHCMC Bui Trung Kien making a presentation at the conference

According to EVNHCMC’s Deputy General Director Bui Trung Kien, with many specific solutions widely deployed in businesses and people, Ho Chi Minh City now has more than 1,700 businesses using more than 1 million kWh/year of electricity that have signed a commitment to participate in the load shifting program, of which 1,357 manufacturing businesses have registered to participate in the DR program. Preliminary results, some businesses participating in the electricity DR program have reduced total power consumption by 25-30% and saved nearly 15% on electricity bills.

Deputy General Director of EVN Vo Quang Lam emphasized that adjusting electricity load and adjusting power consumption capacity contributes to reducing capacity during peak hours, reducing the overload of the power grid, and improving the economic efficiency of the electrical system. With this program, customers enjoy incentives such as improving power supply reliability, being included in the list of priority customers for power supply, shortening the time of handling power grid incidents, and providing maximum support for load demands arising during the process of using electricity, free consultation on safe, economical and effective use of electricity, etc. This solution also helps the Electricity industry balance supply and demand, bringing economic efficiency to the electrical system while helping to increase investment efficiency, improve reliability and quality of power supply, and optimize the balance of power supply and demand.
