EVN and TKV have cooperated closely in ensuring coal supply for power plants

At the meeting between Vietnam Electricity (EVN) and Vietnam National Coal and Mineral Industries Group (TKV) on August 22, the two sides acknowledged the positive results of cooperation in coal supply for thermal power plants in 2024.

Effective and close cooperation to ensure energy security

In the first 7 months of 2024, EVN has ensured sufficient power supply for the country's socio-economic development. The operation of the power system closely followed the plan approved by the Ministry of Industry and Trade, in which coal-fired thermal power sources were highly mobilized; hydropower sources were mobilized according to hydrological and reservoirs’ water conditions, and water-saving targets for the peak months of the dry season in 2024.

The electricity production and import of the entire system accumulated in the first 7 months of this year reached 180.67 billion kWh, an increase of 11.63% over the same period in 2023 (161.84 billion kWh). The total coal-fired thermal power output of the entire system accumulated to July 31, 2024, was 96.63 billion kWh. For EVN's anthracite coal-fired thermal power plants, the total electricity output was 31.454 billion kWh.

Also accumulated in the first 7 months of the year, the total coal volume that TKV and Dong Bac Corporation supplied to EVN's thermal power plants was 15.22 million tons, of which TKV supplied 10.33 million tons, ensuring the demand for electricity production mobilization and actual inventory of the thermal power plants.

EVN General Director Nguyen Anh Tuan speaks at the meeting

Recently, the Steering Committee for coal supply for electricity production of EVN, TKV, and Dong Bac Corporation has been operating better and better, coordinating more and more closely. The quality of coal supplied in recent times has also been improved. EVN leaders hope that TKV will continue to improve the coal quality to be better and more uniform so as not to affect the technical and economic indicators of the thermal power plants. At the same time, EVN requires TKV will promote the maximum exploitation of domestic coal.

Prepare sufficient coal for operating situations

According to the national power system operation method, it is expected that in the last months of 2024 (from August to December), the total electricity output of domestic coal-fired thermal power plants will reach 30.338 billion kWh. In particular, the output of EVN's thermal power plants and EVN’s power generation corporations (EVNGENCOs) in the last 5 months of the year is expected to be 11.840 billion kWh.

The dry season has passed and the rainy season is underway, however, the operation of coal-fired thermal power plants still plays an important role in ensuring power supply. Therefore, EVN requires TKV to update and adjust the coal supply plan if necessary, ensuring readiness for all situations and; at the same time, not to interrupt the coal supply process to ensure power supply security.

TKV General Director Dang Thanh Hai speaks at the meeting

The two groups also agreed on a number of working and cooperation contents in the coming time. In particular, regarding the coal demand in 2025, TKV requires EVN and thermal power plants to promptly balance, calculate, and notify TKV so that the two sides can prepare for production and business planning and sign coal purchase agreement for the next year.
