EVN discusses clean coal technology with Japanese partners

On 25 February 2022, Vietnam Electricity (EVN) had an online meeting with Japanese partners on clean coal technology. This is a program within the cooperation framework between the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan (METI), The New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization of Japan (NEDO), Coal Energy Center of Japan (JCOAL) with the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT, Vietnam) and EVN.

Delegates attending the workshop in an online  form

Speaking at the workshop, Mr. Nguyen Tai Anh, Deputy General Director of EVN said: At the recent COP26, Vietnam has committed to a carbon-neutral roadmap by 2050. This goal is set for Vietnam's energy industry, especially the Power sector great challenges when both ensuring energy security, supplying a stable power source for socio-economic development and having to fulfill commitments to reduce CO2 emissions and minimize the environmental impacts of power generation activities.

Based on the issues that Vietnam in general and EVN, in particular, are concerned about, JCOAL and related units discussed and developed the meeting program for the Technical Working and Exchanging Groups including coal-fired power generation technology in the renewable energy (RE) increasing context, mixed-biomass burning, technology and safe operation when mixing Bitumen/A Bitumen coal; environmental protection fees for coal power plants in Japan; application of ammonia fuel to decarbonize coal-fired power plants, Clean Coal Technology (CCT) towards carbon neutralize, etc.

Mr. Osamu Tsukamoto, General Director of JCOAL spoke at the workshop

The sharing of Japanese and Vietnamese experts at this workshop is very useful to EVN and related units. EVN Deputy General Director Nguyen Tai Anh thanked METI, NEDO and the JCOAL cooperation coordinator for paying much attention and support to the electricity development field, especially coal-fired thermal power in Vietnam.
