Ash and slag are not a hazardous waste
Over the past years, thermal power plants (TPP) under EVNGENCO 1 have gradually managed and controlled effectively the ash and slag created in the production process, slag yards have been "greened" to minimize the impact on the surrounding environment. All TPP are equipped with automatic and continuous monitoring systems and circulating water and cooling water automatic sampling equipment has been added in compliance with regulations.
Duyen Hai Thermal Power Company (Tra Vinh Province) is a bright spot in environmental protection at its slag yard areas. Slag yards at thermal power plants are planted around with Australian pine trees, high dikes are built to form isolated areas, without affecting the environment. The company also stocked fish and shrimp in slag lakes, creating a friendly ecosystem.
Currently, the ash and slag from EVNGENCO 1's thermal power plants have been identified by a qualified unit with the capacity for sampling and analysis. From analysis results, the unit determined that the ash and slag from this source were not hazardous waste and certified that they complied with standards for ash and slag as backfill materials (TCVN 12249: 2018).

Approaching a total solution…
EVNGENCO 1 is approaching a complete solution of the ash and slag problem in the past few years by signing many cooperation contracts of selling out ash and slag to purchaser partners. Along with regular purging and close supervising the implementation and progress of ash and slag treatment at thermal power plants, up to now, solving EVNGENCO 1's ash and slag problem is getting more and more positive.
Uong Bi Thermal Power Company (Quang Ninh province) is a leader of EVNGENCO 1 in managing and selling off ash and slag. For two consecutive years (2019 and 2020), the ash selling out rate of the company had hit 100%.
At Nghi Son Thermal Power Company (Thanh Hoa), which had ash selling out rate of 92% in 2020, ash, slag and gypsum were used at domestic cement factories such as But Son, Xi Long Son, Bim Son, etc.
Similarly, at Duyen Hai Thermal Power Company, up to now, the company has signed 17 contracts for selling out ash and slag. The company uses revenues from selling out ash and slag to aid localities in creating environmental protection funds. With its scale of operation, the amount of ash and slag created by Duyen Hai Thermal Power Company is always 2-3 times larger than that of other companies, but the ash selling out rate of this unit hit more than 80% in the last year.
Recently, in July 2020, Duyen Hai Thermal Power Company was awarded the "First Sustainable Energy Award 2019" by the Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Vietnam Association of Science and Technology for economical and efficient use of energy. The company is now a regular destination for working delegations who want to learn experiences in ash and slag treatment and environmental protection.
Not stopping at signing selling out contracts, EVNGENCO 1 also carefully controls transportation, storage and use of ash and fly ash by its partner. All co-operating units purchasing ash and slag must ensure the safety of people, equipment, means of transport, and comply with environmental regulations and comply with the regulations on management of construction materials.
EVNGENCO 1 always requires and strictly supervises ash and slag transportation, ensuring this material will not spread to the outside and affect the surrounding environment. At EVNGENCO 1, treatment and selling out ash and slag is no longer a hard problem; revenue from ash and slag is reinvested and used to help localities in creating environmental protection funds ...
