'Human resource strategy to adapt to energy transition and digital transformation'

That is the theme of the 10th Annual Meeting of Working Group No.5 of Heads of ASEAN Power Utilities/Authorities (hereinafter referred to as HAPUA) on human resources. The meeting was opened on December 6, 2022, in Cam Ranh (Khanh Hoa).

Mr. Wahizan Abdul Rahman viewed: 2022 is a very successful and fruitful year of HAPUA Working Group No.5. All of the planned projects have been successfully finalized, which reflects the spirit of cooperation and dedication among power utilities/authorities in the region. Working Group No.5 affirms that this is a very effective forum to enhance the solidarity among ASEAN countries in general and among power utilities/authorities in particular.

This meeting plays an important role in conveying the latest governance messages in the regional power sectors so that the ASEAN business community could better integrate, communicate and cooperate with each other through training and networking activities.

According to EVN’s Vice President Nguyen Tai Anh, the global economy is going through a fundamental transformation, notably reform, innovation, with a new mindset and development model associated with sustainable and balanced growth. Even as we have tackled the challenges posed by the pandemic, along with global subsequent issues, we must keep on focusing on the climate crisis and make sustainability at the core of everything we do. This is especially important for ASEAN countries which are highly vulnerable to threats from climate change. To address climate change while ensuring energy security and economic development, each Member State strives to boost their low-carbon development.

In Vietnam, by the end of 2021, the total installed capacity was about 78,000 MW, becoming the leading country in ASEAN in terms of power system scale. In recent years, renewable energy has been developing massively. However, thermal power still accounts for over 32% of the system, playing an important role in ensuring national energy security. By 2050, Vietnam will gradually reduce this proportion to ensure the realization of the Prime Minister's commitment to net zero emissions at COP 26. This change along with the current worldwide prevalent digital transformation trend poses demands on EVN and all ASEAN power utilities/authorities to make profound changes not only in the business process but also in the business model and especially in human resource capacity.

The theme "Human resource strategy to adapt to the energy transition and digital transformation" is chosen for this meeting to encourage ASEAN countries to maintain their production, investment and business activities to facilitate efficient and reliable management of major energy transition and digital transformation trends.

To achieve common goals, the HAPUA community has always enjoyed the support and companionship of regional and international agencies, associations and organizations. The robust cooperation of HAPUA plays an important role in consulting with and supporting each other on energy policies, capacity building and technology transfer to meet energy security, economic development, environmental protection and climate change mitigation criteria.

EVN is always ready to share experiences, best practices, support and cooperate with HAPUA member organizations to realize HAPUA's initiatives, projects, research cooperations, etc., contributing to the development of the ASEAN region and enhancing the position of ASEAN in the international arena.

At the meeting, the Secretariat screened and selected 35 papers from the member organizations, of which 20 papers will be presented at the meeting. The presentations reflect the diversity of this year's thematic initiatives.

The meeting will take place from December 6 to 8, 2022. Evn.com.vn will make further updates.
