Power supply to Southern provinces in 2016: Thermal power plays a key role

In 2016, in order to secure adequate power supply to economic development and residential uses in the Southern region and safe operation of North – South 500 kV transmission line carrying approximately 20 billion kWh from the North and the Center to the South, it is essential to ensure coal supply for uninterrupted operation of power plants in the South.

In 2016, Duyen Hai 1 Thermal Power Plant is required to produce over 6 billion KWh in order to meet the planned power supply for the South. Therefore, EVNGENCO 1 has signed a contract on procurement of over 3 million tons of coal to adequately meet the fuel demand for electricity production. Meanwhile coal demand of Duyen Hai 3 Thermal Power Plant for commissioning, acceptance and operation for Unit 1 in 2016 is estimated at 780,000 tons. Recently, the Corporation has contacted several Indonesian coal suppliers and domestic coal importers to ensure quantity and quality of coal supply for the upcoming power generation plans.

Vinh Tan 2 Thermal Power Plant plays an important role in securing power supply to the South in 2016.

Besides, EVNGENCO 3 maintains stable operation of all units at Vinh Tan 2 Thermal Power Plant, and make sure any shortcomings arising shall be addressed at the earliest to utilize maximum capacity of two units, and secure sufficient coal supply for power generation.

Also in 2016, the electricity output transmitted from the North, the Centre to the South via North – South 500 kV transmission line has still increased. For the time being, the National Power Transmission Corporation (EVNNPT) has speeded up the progress of implementation of Pleiku 2 500 kV substation project and installation of capacitors along Pleiku 2 – Cau Bong 500 kV transmission line aiming to accomplish by March 2016 in order to enhance transmission capacities in North –Centre and Centre – South lines and secure power supply to the South.

At the same time, EVNNPT and other subsidiaries have established specific by-stage schedules of each project; concentrated on accelerating implementation schedules of network projects in synchronization with power generation projects and projects on enhancing transmission capacities to secure power supply to the South such as: 500 kV transmission line in connection to Vinh Tan 4 Thermal Power Plant, Duc Hoa 500 kV substation, Tan Dinh 500 kV substation upgrading, My Tho – Duc Hoa 500 kV transmission line, etc.

In order to secure power supply to the South in 2016, the National Load Dispatch Center requests relevant organizations to coordinate in safely operating gas – electricity system and ultimately prioritizing gas supply for electricity generation. Besides, hydropower reservoirs in the South and the Centre shall be restrictedly discharged except for supplying water to   downstream areas.
