On January 22, 2025, in Hanoi, the Technical Working Group 4 (TWG 4) on Energy Efficiency convened under the co-chairmanship of Ms. Nguyen Thi Lam Giang, Director General of the Department of Energy Efficiency and Sustainable Development (Ministry of Industry and Trade - MOIT), and Mr. Patrick Haverman, Deputy Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Vietnam. This meeting was held within the framework of the Vietnam Energy Partnership Group (VEPG).

The meeting focused on two main topics: Amendments to the Law on Energy Efficiency and Conservation and the Energy Efficiency Fund Model and Carbon credits and greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory in the industrial and trade sector. Additionally, the meeting discussed and proposed the key focus areas for TWG 4 in 2025 and established new specialized task forces.

Session attended by representatives from MOIT, UNDP, GIZ, WWF Vietnam, etc.

Energy efficiency is considered a crucial resource. Efficient and economical energy use plays a vital role in ensuring national energy security, contributing to economic and social development, conserving energy resources, protecting the environment, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions—a critical step in mitigating the impacts of global climate change.

In concluding the meeting, Ms. Nguyen Thi Lam Giang, Director General of the Department of Energy Efficiency and Sustainable Development (MOIT), affirmed that the session covered many valuable discussions, particularly the experience-sharing from Danish and Australian representatives, which Vietnam could use as a reference. She expressed confidence that, in the coming period, the TWG 4 on Energy Efficiency would continue to operate effectively and achieve its set goal.

"The path to net-zero emissions remains long and challenging, requiring efforts not only from the Vietnamese government but also close collaboration with international development partners. It is essential to fulfill commitments, such as those outlined in the Political Declaration on Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP). Given the strong interest and support from international partners in Vietnam's energy sector, I believe that the coordination role of policy dialogue platforms like VEPG in general, and the Energy Efficiency group in particular, is both important and necessary," emphasized Ms. Nguyễn Thị Lâm Giang.

Technical Working Group 4 on Energy Efficiency is one of five Technical Working Groups under the Vietnam Energy Partnership Group (VEPG) established in 2017 by the Government of Vietnam and international development partners. The overarching goal of VEPG is to utilize international support for Vietnam’s sustainable energy development effectively and to facilitate stakeholder engagement in the energy transition process, in alignment with national legislation and international conventions to which Vietnam is a signatory.
