Vietnam officially becomes Association Country of International Energy Agency (IEA)

On February 19, the 2026 Ministerial Meeting of the International Energy Agency (IEA), currently taking place in Paris, France, officially approved the proposal to make Vietnam an Association Country of the organization.

In his opening remarks, Dr. Fatih Birol, Executive Director of the International Energy Agency (IEA), affirmed that member countries highly appreciate the increasingly deep cooperation with Vietnam. Mr. Fatih Birol emphasized that this cooperation aims to build a global energy system that is secure, sustainable, and ensures reasonable costs for all countries.

Dr. Birol stated that with a population of more than 100 million people, along with abundant energy resources such as solar power, hydropower, gas, and the potential for nuclear power development in the future, Vietnam will play an important linking role in the IEA.

Speaking at the conference, Vietnam’s Ambassador to France, Trinh Duc Hai, emphasized that the decision of the IEA is clear evidence of Vietnam’s persistent efforts and determination in the process of energy transition, as well as its actions for the global climate.

This event not only affirms Vietnam’s strong commitment to actively contributing to global energy dialogues but also demonstrates its determination to work with other countries to build a secure, sustainable, and prosperous energy future.

Taking place over two days, February 18–19, the IEA Ministerial Meeting 2026 gathered nearly 60 ministers and senior leaders from member and association countries. In addition, the conference also included dialogue with many leaders from leading global energy and technology corporations such as EDF, TotalEnergies, and Shell.
