63 provinces and cities of Vietnam simultaneously turning off lights to for responding to Earth Hour 2019

On the night of 30th March 2019, the main event of Earth Hour 2019 Campaign took place at August Revolution Square (Hoan Kiem District, Hanoi).

The program was attended by Mrs. Dang Thi Ngoc Thinh - Vice President, Mr. Hoang Quoc Vuong - Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade; representatives, leaders of ministries, branches, the Campaign ambassadors and thousands of pupils and students, citizens who are living and working in the Capital.

For Vietnam Electricity (EVN), Mr. Vo Quang Lam - Deputy General Director of the Group attended the event.

Ms. Dang Thi Ngoc Thinh calling on the whole country to join hands to save energy and protect environment

Speaking at the Ceremony, Vice President Dang Thi Ngoc Thinh emphasized that climate change in global scale had caused a great impact on the living environment of people and greatly influenced the socio-economic development of many countries in the world. Particularly, Vietnam was considered as one of the countries being most heavily affected.

At the 21st United Nations Conference on Climate Change organized in Paris (France) in November 2015, Vietnam and other countries approved the Paris Agreement on climate change, committed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 8% in the period of 2021-2030 compared to the normal development scenario and it can be reduced by up to 25% in case of obtaining effective support from the international community.

Most recently, on 13th March 2019, the Prime Minister approved the National program on economical and effective use of energy with the target of from 5-7% energy savings on total national energy consumption for the period of 2019 - 2025 and from 8-10% in the period of 2025 -2030.

“Earth Hour Campaign once again affirms the determination of Vietnam in improving the efficiency of energy use, responding to climate change and protecting the environment. The campaign of 2019 with a specific and practical message: “Saving energy, protecting the earth” once again conveys a message to agencies, enterprises and all people to join hands for saving energy and protecting natural resources and the environment, aiming at the sustainable development of the country by practical actions”, emphasized by the Vice President.

At the Ceremony, Vice President Dang Thi Ngoc Thinh called on all organizations, individuals, families and enterprises to turn off unnecessary electric equipment to join hands in saving energy, contributing to environmental protection.

Along with Hanoi, Earth Hour 2019 Campaign continues to obtain the active response from many people in 62 provinces and cities.

After 1 hour tuning off lights to respond to the Campaign (from 08:30 pm – 09:30 pm), the whole country saved 492,000kWh, equivalent to about VND 917 million.

Earth Hour Campaign founded by the World Wild Fund (WWF) is a global campaign started in Sydney city (Australia) in 2007, aiming to encourage each individual, household as well as business establishment to turn off lights and unnecessary electric equipment within an hour from 08:30 - 09:30 pm (local time) on the last Saturday of March every year.

Earth Hour Campaign in Vietnam has created a strong spread, positive changes to the social community, people in the awareness of energy saving and environmental protection.

Over the past 11 years, Vietnam Electricity has been the main sponsor of the Vietnam Earth Hour.
