EVN and its partners proactively prepare many solutions available for power supply in 2024

On 22 August 2023, in Hanoi, Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien chaired a meeting with Vietnam Electricity (EVN), Vietnam Oil and Gas Group (PVN), and Vietnam National Coal - Mineral Industries Holding Corporation Limited (KTV), Vietnam National Petroleum Group, Northeast Corporation on solutions to ensure national energy security and power supply in the last months of 2023 and 2024.

EVN strives to implement solutions

At the meeting, leaders of 5 groups and corporations reported on the results of the first 7 months of the year and plans to ensure energy security and power supply in the last months of 2023 and 2024.

According to Mr. Tran Dinh Nhan - EVN’s President and CEO, in general, the coal supply for power generation has been ensured, the incidents of thermal power plants have been gradually overcome, the water in hydropower reservoirs has been improved, so the power supply in the remaining months of 2023 shall basically be guaranteed, meeting sufficient power for people's production, business, and daily life needs.

Regarding power supply in 2024, EVN’s President and CEO said that EVN has calculated the balance of power supply and demand in 2024 with electricity demand growing by 8.96% compared to 2023 and 2 scenarios of water flow in hydropower reservoirs (the normal level with a frequency of 65% and the extreme level, as happened in 2023, with a frequency of 90%.).

Chairman of the Board of Directors of EVN Dang Hoang An giving speech

To ensure power supply in the last months of 2023 and the whole year 2024, EVN has been focused actively on implementing synchronous solutions. In which, EVN efforts to ensure the availability of the power plants managed by EVN and its member units (currently accounting for about 37% of the system's installed capacity), and minimize incidents of power plants, especially coal-fired power units in the North; organize to immediately implement solutions to overcome the decline in the capacity of the units due to factors of environmental temperature, cooling water, and low tide.

EVN also works with TKV, PVN, Vietnam Gas Corporation, and Northeast Corporation to ensure sufficient fuel (coal, gas) for power production; schedule high mobilization of thermal power plants from the beginning of 2024 to regulate and keep the water level of hydropower reservoirs at the level (especially in the North) at the end of the dry season in an optimal manner following regulations...

Also at the meeting, Mr. Dang Hoang An - Chairman of the Board of Directors of EVN emphasized the importance of close coordination between EVN, groups, and corporations in power supply, especially for TKV and PVN – two corporations both generate power and supply fuel for power generation. Mr. Dang Hoang An said that in the coming time, EVN shall work, coordinate, and agree with groups, and corporations on the fuel supply for power production.

To ensure the supply of coal and gas for power production

Mr. Tran Dinh Nhan - EVN’s President and CEO giving speech

The Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien required that EVN, TKV, and PVN need to direct to thoroughly overcome the problems of thermal and hydropower plants/units within their management scope, ensuring that the plants promote high availability. TKV, PVN, and Northeast Corporation must absolutely ensure the supply of coal and gas for power production.

The Minister required EVN to accelerate the completion of power source and grid projects, especially transmission projects to release the capacity of power sources; and urgently negotiate to mobilize transitional renewable energy projects as well as other power projects.
