National Grid reaches out sea islands

On 01 January 2016, EVN officially agreed to the management, operation and investment in power supply for Bach Long Vi island district (Hai Phong), thus EVN has managed power supply to up to 9 out of 12 island districts. EVN will strive to basically ensure households across the country have access to electricity by 2020.

3 years, focusing all resources

After connecting the national grid by sub-marine cables to the islands of Co To, Phu Quoc, Ly Son, Vietnam Electricity (EVN) continues improving the distribution system and expanding the network to communes and villages in the island districts.

In the North, after the success of the project "Bringing power from the national grid to island of Coto" which supplies power to more than 5,000 households on the island by October 2013, EVN continues assigning Quang Ninh Power Company (PC Quang Ninh) to represent for the investor to build and complete the power supply project to 2,100 households in five communes of Van Don island district by late 2014.

Thanks to that investment, the national grid reached 100% of villages, increasing the percentage of households using electricity from the national grid in Quang Ninh province to 99.85%. Under the plan, the projects of supplying power from national grid to Cai Chien Island (Hai Ha district) and Tran Island (Co To District) in Quang Ninh will be completed during the 2015-2017 period.

At the Central region, to synchronize the stable power supply for Ly Son island district from the national grid by sub-marine cables, for 2 years (2013-2014), the Central Power Corporation (EVNCPC) has invested more than VND29 billion to perform the sub-project of  upgrading the distribution networks of Ly Son island district, Quang Ngai province under the Rural area energy efficiency improvement project (KfW loan).

Along with many other power projects, EVNCPC concentrated on the Project of power supply by sub-marine cables to Cham Island (Quang Nam province), ensuring the power supply by June 2016 etc…

To be able to inaugurate the  22 kV submarine cable project to supply power to Thanh An Commune, Can Gio District on 17 April 2015 - the only island commune of Ho Chi Minh city, EVNHCMPC has invested more than VND200 billion and focused all resources to start the project in December 2014.

During the period of 2013 - 2015, the Southern Power Corporation (EVNSPC) has successfully implemented many important projects to connect the national grid to islands. Especially, it is a great success to complete the power supply project by submarine cables to Phu Quoc island district and connect the over-head line to Hon Tre Island commune, Kien Giang Province.

In September 2015, EVNSPC continue commencing the project "Power supply from the national grid to Lai Son island commune, Kien Giang province". This is a component of the project of supplying power by the national power grid to the island communes of Kien Giang province for the period of 2015 - 2020, with total investment of more than VND 1,506 billion.

The national grid reach  the sea islands of the country

Not only being electrified...

The change in socio-economic development of such islands as Co To, Ly Son, Phu Quoc after being connected to the national power grid has shown the important role of power supplied.

According to Prof.(Academician) Ph.D. Tran Dinh Long – Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Electricity Association, “the power supply for the islands "shortened" the distance between the mainland with the islands; power tariff are equal to the mainland’s one. Electricity also contributes to ensuring social order and safety on the island. The security and the defense of national sovereignty are maintained. The supply of power from the national grid to the islands has so far also made a significant contribution to the modernization of the electricity industry. At Ly Son island, along with connecting power from the national grid to the island, EVNCPC has equipped the entire measuring system with electronic meters. This is a target that EVN is striving to perform well on the mainland and is scheduled to be completed by 2020. For island districts, when we just started building the national grid, we had the opportunity to perform early electrification", quoted Professor Tran Dinh Long.

Upon completion of project supplying power to Ly Son island, power has been supplied 24/24 hours for district residents

The power light will continue to reach out further

Mr. Duong Quang Thanh - Chairman of Management Board of Vietnam Electricity confirmed, EVN would continue to perform investment, ensure stable and reliable power supply, accommodate socio-economical development for the island districts and communes which have been connected to the national grid. As an example, in  Phu Quoc island district, EVN is performing a research on investment to upgrade and expand the power grid to meet the power demand serving the tourism development and life of the island residents after 2020.

For Bach Long Vi island district (Hai Phong), since it is 140 km far from the mainland, it is really difficult to connect the national grid to the island. Therefore, Bach Long Vy Island will firstly use renewable energy sources such as wind power combined with diesel power sources.

In the long term, EVN will study alternatives using solar energy in order to take advantage of the island. Although the power supply from these sources will cost much more than that from the national grid to the mainland, EVN, thus, still committed to ensure stable and reliable power supply for 24/24 hours, properly serving socio-economical development and living needs of the army force and local inhabitants at the power tariff as applied on the mainland.

Not only supplying power to the islands, EVNSPC has invested on 3 projects to upgrade and develop power sources and networks on Phu Quy island district (total investment of VND253 billion). It is expected to be completed in the year 2016. At Con Dao district, Ba Ria-Vung Tau province, EVNSPC is performing installation of 2 diesel units for An Hoi power plant with a total investment of VND30 billion, the first unit of 1,500 kW being put into operation in 2015, and the second unit of 1,500 kW being put into operation in 2017.

Many projects of supply power for the island districts and communes are being implemented by EVN in accordance with the Government’s approved programs of rural, mountainous and island electrification during 2013 – 2020 period. EVN commits to prioritize capital investment to meet the target that by 2020 EVN will basically supply power to households nationwide from the national grid etc.

Vietnam Electricity (EVN) supplied power to 9/12 island districts including: Van Don and Co To (Quang Ninh); Cat Hai and Bach Long Vy (Hai Phong); Ly Son (Quang Ngai); Phu Quy (Binh Thuan); Con Dao (Ba Ria - Vung Tau); Phu Quoc, Kien Hai (Kien Giang).

Of which:

- Island districts of Phu Quy, Bach Long Vy, Con Dao are powered from local power sources.

- The remaining island districts are using power from the national grid.

Three remaining island districts have not been supplied power from the national grid: Hoang Sa, Truong Sa and Con Co.
